All right, Jay. That sounded just comfort-foody and white-trashy enough to be interesting, so I gave it a go today.
I made a double batch and used a roughly 9" x 13" pan.
Here's the meat and onion mixture in the pan:
After cooking for 25 minutes with the Bisquik mixture poured over it:
And after cooking maybe 15 more minutes with the cheese on top:
And here's the final product served in a bowl:
Yes, I enjoyed it and I'll enjoy it for a few lunches this upcoming week. No, I don't think we're gonna catch WanderingWalrus making this anytime soon.
It appears that I cooked mine less than Isildur did, but if I had to do it again I think I'd cook it longer during the first stage, then apply the cheese, then cook it again just long enough to melt and slightly brown the cheese. As I did it, the cheese became a sort of tasty leather on top. Not bad, but not particularly cheesy.
