I like French President butter and it's nice and soft at room temperature.

We use nothing but butter. We keep it in a butter dish on the counter over by the toaster. No extra firm butter has been identified in this household.

Same here. Butter dish with cover on the Counter, nice and soft. Let me run upstairs and see what the Wife buys.

Ok, it's "Darigold Natural Butter Salted" Room temp and it's soft and spreads like, well.....Butter. :wink05:

Well, it's tasting more and more like plastic, anyway....

I dunno...
Something about Magpick asking if it's getting harder threw me off a bit.

Karigold is better, but we usually buy Costco butter, freeze a couple.
Leave it out on the counter. If it sits out too long, pitch it and try another one.

Madpick, I’m glad you brought this up. I noticed the same thing. I swore that I remembered it way softer when I was a kid. Glad to know I’m not crazy.

Phew . . . thanks.

For those who asked about brands, we've used Darigold and Tillamook, and haven't seen a difference. Maybe I'll try some of the fancy-schmancy brands that y'all mentioned, and see what happens.

And yeah, the "spreadable" butters are a good option just for toast or whatever, but I'd still like to find something softer for other cooking needs.

There’s kind of a time and place for the fancy butters IMO. If you’re having fresh crab or poaching lobster Plugra takes it to a whole other level. For scraping over burnt bread? Kind of overkill.

Checked the fridge, and we typically get Darigold. I polled the family, and they haven't noticed any difference. The wife chimed in that the fancey Irish butter does stay a little too firm to spread.

If you bake, Plugra will change your life. Incredible in pastry and most any other cooking.
Kerrygold is better tasting (to me) used as spread, especially compared to Costco or Darigold.

Never paid attention to spreadability, taste to me is more important. If it's too hard, put it in a bowl and then put hot water in a larger bowl and a minute or so later it's perfect.

The Shit you learn from all places… WaGuns!

“Plugrá is a brand of butter made in the United States by Dairy Farmers of America. It is made with a higher butterfat content than most American butter (82% butterfat, vs. 80%.) The name "Plugra" is derived from the French plus gras ("more fat").”

I have noticed a difference.
Maybe the modern refrigerators are more efficient and colder? So it takes longer to melt? Even on hot items??

I've left my butter out for a day or so, so I don't think it's a matter of not coming up to temp.
