My 21 year old son has finally decided to purchase his own AR. He’s looking at a the Colt Trooper LE6920-R or the new Springfield Saint with the free float rail. Not big on the rail that comes with the Colt and he seems to prefer the flat top look instead of the A2 fixed front sight. The Springfield is nice since it has the Bravo Co grip and stock. Anyone have experience with either of these two. His goal is to find something below 1k that is ready out of the box for the most part.
Thanks in advance

I had a colt 6720 which is pretty much the same as the 6920 but with a lighter barrel. It was nothing special - finish was meh, price was too high, was assembled correctly.
Personally, I'd go with the Springfield Saint between the two. It uses improvements such as a nitride finish on the barrel that protects the bore, keymod handguard, better trigger, and a midlength gas system.

You can get a lot of rifle for under $1,000 now, especially compared to a year or two ago. Has he looked at Aero Precision? They're a local company and they make nice stuff. Used might be a good way to go, too. He'll get more for his money that way.

I’ve got both a 6920 and 6720. I like ‘em. I think a Colt is a good way to go. Yes there are better ARs out there but Colt is the original and has the mystique.
Rails and furniture are easy enough to swap out. So don’t let whether it has a rail be a deciding factor.

Thanks in advance Either of those are good, but there are some other options that I would pick first including the Armalite police trade for $500 or a Larue kit for 1k: http://www.larue.com/larue-ultimate-ar-15-upper-kithttp://www.larue.com/larue-billet-lower ... c080f87bf1

Yes, go with the larue, and do the in house payments on the police trade in. A great new gun and a nice beater that he wouldn't care gets dirty.

I have not had good luck with some police trade in's. I got a couple that were less than acceptable.

If he wants a brand name rifle the Ruger AR556 and S&W sport II are hard to beat. If he doesn't need a name brand the PSA website has all kinds of great packages for under $600. Go on slickguns and find one of the optic/pmag packages. I recently saw one for $170 for 10 pmags and a vortex strikefire.
$500 rifle with magpul furniture +tax&transfer= $600 Strikefire + 10 pmags deal = $170 Magpul flip up BUIS + $60 Magpul railed vertical grip = $25 Case of 5.56 ammo = $250
$1105 and he's got a good fully equipped rifle with 10 mags, BUIS, an optic, and RVG, and 1k rounds of ammo. Ready to rock!

Aero midgas at Brownells with a coupon and add your own furniture. Best bang for the buck out there. Aero is high quality with an excellent warranty department. Made in Tacoma USA! My similar Aero A2 built upper has been the most reliable that I own. https://www.brownells.com/firearms/rifl ... bPRECISION
