If you are thinking about getting a multi-season deer permit, WDWF just informed me that there are 2000 multi-season deer permits left.

Multiple things here. The original purchase by date if you were drawn for Multiseason was 7/31/17. If you were drawn for MS you were guaranteed a tag if bought by that date.
After that date, WDFW opens it up so that anyone that applied for a MS deer tag can then purchase one of the remaining tags on a 1st come 1st served basis. You have to have applied for it to buy it even after the deadline. Pretty much every year there are left over Deer tags, usually all the way into end of season in Dec.
ELK on the other hand there are usually 100 or so remaining after the 7/31 deadline and those sell out within 1 min of being made available in Mid Aug. No joke, last year it was around 30-40seconds and they were gone.
All that said 2000 seems extremely high to have left overs given there were only approx 3500 total tags available. That means 57% of people that applied and were drawn for MS Deer did not buy it. That is really unfortunate, these tags are required if you want to apply for special draws in multiple seasons(modern, archery, muzzy), so having a bunch of guys not get drawn for MS because 2000+ people applied that do not need the tag and do not purchase once drawn is sad. All those hunters are forced to only apply for a single weapon draw. Used to be applying for deer MS was a guaranteed draw. Now it is not that way and lots of people do not get drawn, yet so many tags remain.

They're the ones who created that fiasco of a system in the first place.

They're the ones who created that fiasco of a system in the first place. Not blaming hunters for the WDFW created mess, just wish people that did not need to get the permit for applying for special draws or planned to actually hunt multiple seasons would not apply is all. I apply and use MS to be able to hunt early and late archery (my preffered weapon) but so that I can also go out and hunt wiht my son during modern season if I have not tagged out in early archery. Ohh it gets better. Now there are rumblings that people want to change the deer to be East/West as well, like the absolute PITA mess that Elk is. Mind you the E/W border is the peak of the cascades so a huge section of the state is "E" but holds fewer elk. But those here in puget sound that would head up I90 and 410 to hunt have to watch out because if they cross a peak they are out of unit and poaching. Lot of this mess is why hunt Idaho more than WA now. Worth the 9hr drive to get better season and better herd populations.

I had specifically called and asked about multi-season elk tags being available and she started talking about deer. "They sold out in moments.", she said.

Newbie question. If I just want one deer, does the multi season provide any benefit?

Well I got mine today. Anyone else?
I was thinking, why doesn't the state open up a two deer tag for all those hunters would do it or a limited number. With that many left over, it seems they want more people to have more opportunity to kill.

They don't want you to actually harvest an animal - let alone more than one; they just want your money.
