Always struck me odd that Florida does the CPL licenses through their Dept of Agriculture. http://freebeacon.com/issues/hackers-ob ... licensees/The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, which oversees concealed-weapons licensing, announced on Tuesday overseas hackers had stolen the private information of over 16,000 gun owners. The breach, first reported by the Tampa Bay Times, is being investigated by the department. Agriculture commissioner Adam Putnam has ordered a "comprehensive review" of cybersecurity measures in the wake of the hack. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is also involved in the investigation of the matter. The Department of Agriculture said that, in addition to the private information of over 16,000 gun owners being taken, 469 people also had their Social Security numbers stolen in the hack. To help protect those people, the agency is offering free credit monitoring for a year.

Didn't know that Florida CPL went through that department. That seems strange as hell to me, too. Does anyone here know why? Also hackers

Also hackers Dept of Ag. is responsible for a lot of things in those southeastern states. When I managed a climbing gym in Ky. we had a portable climbing wall to take to events. The state considered it an "amusement ride" and therefor had to be inspected by the dept of agriculture. They are in charge of carnivals. They also check the gas pumps, I don't think we even had a dept of weights and measures, or whomever WA has to check them (I'll have to look at the sticker next time I fill up). I think it goes back to the beginnings of government. The Ag departments were the most important/largest. When new regulations popped up the state would just assign them to the Dept of Ag since they already had lots of resources and infrastructure. Back then pretty much everything revolved around agriculture since that was the primary source of income.

Did the hackers get them off Hillary's server? Were they Russian hackers?

Florida doesn't have a CPL. Florida has a Concealed Weapons Permit.

At least WDFW got to blame their vendor. So far it looks like Florida's breach was entirely within their own systems.

You almost don't need hackers here in WA. The scuzzy attorney from Seattle, Pete Holmes, tried to pretend there was ambiguity in how the law exempts WA CPL info from public information requests. He went to the "sunshine committee" and attempted to make it sound like new law was needed to "protect" CPl holders, which was just an attempt to make it sound ambiguous so that while the legislature was working on bills to address this fake confusion, he could push to have the names released despite DOL never doing that for DECADES. You can watch this absurdity here, CPL portion starts at 49:55. Hat tip to Gogodawgs from OCDO who attended and testified. You can see Pam Roach rip into Pete Holmes for this obvious political stunt. https://www.tvw.org/watch/?customID=2013031063

It's handled by the department of ag because in Florida, permits grow on trees.
