 Shot Spotter and Seattle
‘Shot Spotter’ not solution to violence if Boston is Seattle’s example Thursday afternoon at Seattle City Hall, the first look at a technology now in use in other cities to pinpoint gunshots will be offered to the City Council’s public safety committee, and according to KOMO, the city is looking at “Shot Spotter” for a trial run in some neighborhoods, possibly South Seattle. http://www.examiner.com/article/shot-sp ... b_articles

I hope it's built well. Putting one in South Seattle it will likely burst into flames after a long night.

 Re: Shot Spotter and Seattle
What a waste of $$... Shot Spotter? Most people call 911 when they hear gun shots and scream "Billy's been shot by some dude on the corner of 9th and Plum!"... So unless Billy was shot be a long range sniper... I do not see how this tech is going to benefit?

Things like this didn't work when I was in Iraq. It will not work here either. If the city wants to throw money into a hole... that hole can be my pocket.... or better yet... use it to pay off the city's debt.

So this is the same technology that they deploy for the President right? Same technology in Oakland? Well I hope it works as well as Drew says.

 Re: Shot Spotter and Seattle
Probably another case of someone's relative being a sales rep for the company making the gear.
I can't see any acoustic device like this working in a city environment. Maybe in the wide open spaces where the sound isn't bounced around off buildings a dozen times before being picked up by microphones.
I think Massivedesign has hit it spot on. Want to know where the shots came from? Just listen to the 911 calls.
As for Rainier Valley, why not just set up some Counter Battery radar. When incoming rounds are detected just send some back. Too bad it only works for the bigger stuff like mortar and artillery fire.

 Re: Shot Spotter and Seattle
Shot spots meant something altogether different when I was younger. Both items were about as useful, distasteful, and wasteful.

 Re: Shot Spotter and Seattle
It's fair to debate the effectiveness of the system, but I don't believe as gun owners we should philosophically be opposed to this. This system does exactly what we want it to do: It goes after the criminals, without taking away the rights of everyone.
If it works, and increases the chances of police catching the scumbags, then I'm in favor of it.

Ultimately, wouldn't it be cheaper, and more productive to put a few more sets of ears on the ground via the way of cops? When reading the Seattle news, I rarely hear of an article about a person found dead from a long passed gunshot wound.

What does a cop cost the city? $150,000 a year, maybe? Include salary, benefits, training, gear, cruiser . . . maybe I'm low. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see more police too. I've read some pretty positive reviews of Shot Spotter in the past. Maybe it doesn't always work well, but apparently it does in some cases. My point is this: In principle, as gun owners, I don't see anything wrong with Shot Spotter. Whether it's more cost-effective than more police . . . that I don't know.

IMHO it is a variation of the Traffic camera. Total waste of money as it would pick up ANY sound over a certain decible level. Massive beans farts would set it off.
