There is a lot of good advice here. I would echo going and actually shooting several different pistols including the G19. You may find that you prefer how the M&P, XD Mod 2 or XDM, MPQ, CZ, or the Sig 226/9 feels in your hand. There are a lot of quality pistols with a similar price point to the G19 and you would be doing yourself a disservice if you didnt at least try some of the other offerings. I started with a 1911, and decided I wanted something with more capacity, so I shot several pistols including the G19 and ended up with the M&P. You may get out there and realize you really do love the G19, but it is still worth the time and money (~$100 between range fee, rentals, and ammo).

The one you will actually practice/train with is the "best". The fastest way to find that one is to rent/borrow as many as you can until your time/budget is up, or you find "it". You'll know it when you shoot it. Itll be fun, and youll want to do it some more. This "fit" is highly individual, and cannot be achieved on the internet, sorry.

Second most of the advice here about finding a range to try a bunch.
Hit a few stores and handle a bunch as well. If it doesn't feel quite right at first touch its probably not for you.

Too add to it, find someone (even from WAguns!) and go with them shooting. Lots of us are instructors also I would strongly suggest you find a Handgun 101 class at one of the ranges. That get's you some basic info and most will have a shooting session so you can ask the kind of basic questions all of us asked in those classes as well.

not sure where you live as you didn't give us at least a part fo the state you live in. If you are up north I would be glad to meet and talk some basics for you to consider.
I also second the suggestion to buy a 22LR handgun as your first. Get proficient in its operation. That will go along way to helping you decide what to get as your self defense, carry, house gun, or what ever you are planning. There are quite a few to pick from, I started with the the Smith and Wesson MP22 which has worked great. (Just have to keep it clean and well oiled.) But that works well since you learn to clean your firearm well too!

I guess I'm from a different century. I think the perfect handgun for a beginner is a revolver, probably in .38 spl.

To me it's like learning to drive in a vehicle with "stick shift". Learn that way and you can drive, or in this case shoot, pretty much anything.

Most of those I know who are super accurate with a pistol learned by shooting a revolver double action.

Revolvers will always have a place in a well equipped self defense "armory". It's about the only weapon you can go through "indian country" aka downtown Seattle streets late at night with it in your hand and in a jacket pocket yet be able to fire it 5-6 times without jamming. Yeah it's hard on jackets but you can survive even if the person confronting you already has a gun in their hand.

Fixed it for you Dreadi

Where are you located? At our local range for $25 you can use any of their rental guns (they even have AR`S and AK`s) as long as you use their ammo. Your best bet is to try something like this so you can try multiple firearms.
