Pre-64 Winchester M-70 Info

Fri Oct 14, 2016 11:23 pm

Hey guys new to the forum, was hoping to get some additional info on this rifle I picked up two weeks ago. It's a pre-64 Winchester model 70 in 30-06 which has been a bucket list gun of mine for some time. Was curious as to some of the details of this particular gun because some things stand out to me such as the scope mount, cheek pad, grip cap and Gov't markings. Not sure what was standard of which model and such. Serial number puts this at 1948 production, really excited about this purchase, any info is greatly appreciated.

Well, it appears there is a Griffen & Howe scope mount. Those are period correct, but leave three to five large holes in the side of the receiver (usually mounted with three screws and two pins). The caliber markings are not unusual. The stock looks like a replacement, or heavily modified. Pistol grip cap, bottom inlays, forend tip and checkering, and butt pad are all non-factory. The check piece is also non factory, so my guess would be that the whole stock is aftermarket. Finish on the metal does not appear to be original.

All together, it's probably a fine gun with great utility. It's not collectable by most standards, and it's not worth breaking up to sell for parts, since the receiver will have extra holes.

Welcome to WaGuns, J_Daniels42! :wavey:

That's a nice-looking older rifle; congrats on finding it and completing that bucket list item.

By "Gov't markings" do you mean the ".30 GOV'T '06" mark? That's just the caliber; it's another name for .30-06. Reference:

I have a 1952 model 70 in complete stock condition and I think Stokes hit it on the head about the stock and the finish, i unsure about the scope mount but Stokes hit it on the head on the other parts so I would take his word on the mount

Thanks guys, yea I figured the Gov't was just the old way of putting the caliber on there, not too worried about collectibility or parts, happy to have found myself what should be a good shooter, it's goin into the mountains with me this year for sure!

Thanks
