I am starting an IDPA 101 class. This class is specifically based for those who want to start shooting IDPA matches for fun, practice or competition. This is NOT a Defensive Handgun class and nothing in this class should be considered "training" for any Defensive Handgun situations.
IDPA is the International Defensive Pistol Association. They put on matches/competitions all over the country. The basic principle is to put on matches using common everyday defensive carry guns and gear. So you won't see or compete against any "race guns" with optic red dot sights and compensator's. IDPA is not training but it is great practice for gun handling skills and shooting. You get to shoot and move, move while shooting, shoot multiple targets, shoot moving targets, shoot from kneeling and prone positions. IDPA is a competition because you are timed and scored each time you shoot. But you don't have to shoot it as a competition, a lot of people shoot it just for the practice and don't care what their final score is at the end of the day.
So you can get an idea of what happens during a match, here is a video from my last match in Puyallup.
This class is based toward people who have never shot any type of pistol match before and will focus on IDPA rules and regulations. So we would start from Range Commands and basic drawing and reholstering your gun. We will also cover; Safety and Range Procedures, Equipment & Gear, Divisions & Classifications, Basic Shooting Drills & Reloading Techniques, Stage Procedures, Scoring & Penalties, Shooting from Cover & Target Engagement. At the last part of the class we will setup two IDPA legal stages and shoot them and score them as if they were a real match.
Right now I have two dates available, Friday June 1st and Sunday June 17th. I am only taking a max of 6 people for each class. I will add more dates if the interest is there. I expect the class to take about 6 hours and 300 rounds of ammo should be enough.
The classes will be held at Renton Fish & Game Club. The cost is $45 per person.
Please post here if interested and I will contact you with registration info.
Thanks!!!

Re: IDPA 101 Classes
Just to recap...
Friday, June 1, 2012 10-5pm OR Sunday, June 17, 2012 10-5pm
Cost is $45
Great low stress way to get started in either IDPA or see what is offered for those focused on self defense as many of the skills are key skill builders (draw, multiple targets, using cover, mag changes, etc).
Damon is a great guy! I would highly recommend. As you may know or not... he shoots a lot of IDPA matches all over Washington and has been top in his category (so he can shoot). Also get a short video!

IDPA 101 Classes
Welcome to WaGuns, Susan. We're glad to have you here.
To echo what oldkim said, Damon is a great guy and obviously knows his stuff when it comes to IDPA. I would definitely recommend jumping on this to anyone who is interested in trying IDPA-style shooting.
I've done it. It's FUN.

Re: IDPA 101 Classes
The Missus' birthday is June 18, so I'd like to give her the 101 class on June 17 as a present as long as she can use our Bersa Firestorm 22LR pistol and holster. Let me know how to proceed.

That's fine, the holster needs to be stiff enough so you don't have to hold it open with your other hand to reholster. We will do a lot of draws and reholstering. Have at least 3 mags. Mag pouches would be good too but you can keep them in your pockets and reload from there. We will do a lot of reloading practice too.
