Post Alter Your Gun's Trigger Pull
What does everyone think about altering a handgun's trigger pull to make it lighter for possibly more accurate shooting?

I moved this to the proper location.

There is nothing wrong with altering the trigger to gain a lighter, crisper pull with less of a reset. Most guys prefer it unless the factory trigger is acceptable. I tend to do trigger jobs on all my guns personally.

How light and what type of gun?

This is very acceptable and common for those shooting bullseye (accuracy type) shooting.

How light?

Post Re: Alter Your Gun's Trigger Pull
Tactical, sorry for the post being in the wrong spot, and thank you for reposting it properly. Thank you also for your response.

oldkim, it's a Glock 26. I'm a newbie, so I don't know what I would do if I did have the trigger pull altered. I would probably speak with a gunsmith about it. I had been at the range & spoke with someone who had their gun altered for a lighter pull so it peaked my curiousity. I haven't used the gun that much yet, so I'm not going to jump at changing anything if at all. I was wondering if there was a general consensus about altering a gun in that way, like if it was considered bad in general to do to any gun, and that perhaps it was meant to stay with the same trigger pull.

It's good to get the feedback that it doesn't ruin the gun in any way. If I did alter the trigger pull, it wouldn't be to make it what I would consider too light, which would mean it didn't take much pressure to pull the trigger. I don't have any knowledge of other guns, but did have someone offer to let me shoot their Kimber. The person didn't say if the trigger pull was altered, but I felt it was too light. The other person's gun I shot that was altered felt very good.

The gun is meant for target shooting, home protection and to carry concealed, so I don't want it to have a very light trigger for carrying.

There ya go . . . that's the bottom line.

If you're new to shooting and new to the gun, don't be in a rush to change it. But if you do, and it's a self-defense gun, then don't make it so light that you might accidentally fire a round.

MadPick, thanks for your reply. I was thinking the same thing. After I bought my gun, I read a lot of articles about various scenarios in which I may use it for protection while out and about. I'm thinking one scenario could be my having to have a bullet in the chamber if I feel I'm really ready to use my gun, and at that time, I don't want it to go off too easily, even though I know to not point it at anyone until I'm ready to shoot, and to keep my finger off the trigger until it's pointed directly at what I'm shooting at.

Good advice from MadPick!

Just as a reference as I'm not a Glock person...

1911 are typically about a 4-5 lb trigger pull (nice for single action). Some folks will want to go lighter to about 3.5-4 lbs.
Most 1911 gunsmiths won't go much lighter for a carry gun.

When you get much lighter it becomes a "hair trigger"

Also as a reference... the reason most police departments have gone to a heavy Double Action (10-15 lbs) is that under stress you'd be amazed what it can do.

I'm sure you may of seen this video of a deputy assisting in the arrest and has a Negligent Discharge (ND).

Post Re: Alter Your Gun's Trigger Pull
oldkim, my Glock is a 5.5 trigger pull.

Wow, and no, I have not seen that video!!! I watched it a few times.

I'm still getting used to my new gun, especially since I had a finger injury which kept me from practicing. I have shot a Taurus .380 a few times that was very easy for me to shoot, which was my ex's gun. I may have used it once a year for a few years when he used it.

The Glock 26 9mm is more of a challenge to get the accuracy I had with the Taurus. The Glock is a good fit in my hand (I did get a pinky extender on it), and I have good accurancy with it, but I have plenty of room for improvement with better groupings and using it at a farther distance. Now that I have my own gun, besides practicing to improve my skills and becoming more at one with it, I plan on going to the range a few times a year to keep my skills up, plus I enjoy target shooting.

I agree with MadPick and Oldkim.

For a self defense gun don't go lighter then 4lbs. A lot of gun smiths won't go lighter then 4lbs if they know its a carry/defense gun.

You could probably make it a lot smoother and the break crisper and shorten the reset without lowering the the pull to much. Having a very smooth pull, crisp break and short reset can sometimes be better then just a light trigger pull.

I carry a XD9 and have a full custom trigger job done on it. I use it as my everyday carry gun and also my competition gun. The trigger breaks at about 4-4.5lbs and is very smooth and has a short reset. If it was a competition only gun I might go lighter on the pull but since I carry it as a defensive gun I'm happy with the way it is. I know one member here that has a trigger pull of only 1.5lbs on his competition only gun!!

1911's... 4lbs is the normal for carry. A carry revolver? 5-7lbs. A Glock? 23lbs.

Where are you located? I have a few extra toys left over from my Glock days. If you are anywhere near me (not likely with the people who come to this board  ) I would have no problem giving you some parts and teaching you how to do a trigger job on your Glock. I also wouldn't mind letting you borrow my tools to do it.

And is just me or does anyone else notice that when you look at glock spelled out its a funny looking word??

That, to my way of thinking, would be akin to polishing a turd.

I've been told that Glocks come with a 6-6.5lb trigger pull from the factory. Given the nature of the trigger system, how much lighter can you really go?

I went overboard tinkering with my old G23 and I got it to around 1 lb, not that I would do that with a carry gun. The easiest thing you can do is polish all contact surfaces to a mirror shine, do a Wolff spring kit (cpwsa.com - $11.75 w\shipping), and put a 3.5 lb connector in. Total time is about 30-40 minutes and total cost is about $30-$40. That put mine right around 4 lbs with a really crisp trigger.
