I'm bugging out of work with my get-home bag :) Regardless what you call it and whichever way you're heading, having a bag loaded with the right gear for at least 72hrs is a good idea. While my truck is loaded with food and water, I may have to leave it behind and carry everything I need to provide security and safely get me home.
22LR Conversion in my 223/5.56 Pistol is making more sense.

22LR Conversion in my 223/5.56 Pistol is making more sense. I would agree on a "get home" bag, but the whole "bugging out" thing confuses me. In an OMG, it's Armageddon, or an Asteroid is gonna hit, or "Red dawn" or whatever, where the hell do you think you are going to go? Unless you have an APC or a helicopter you aren't going anywhere soon. The 72 hour "get home" bag makes complete sense, the "Bug out" bag doesn't. Just my .02

I agree on the why "bug out" philosophy. But then I don't live in urban America either...My "get home bag" setup rides with me in whatever vehicle I'm traveling in at the moment. If I'm traveling more than a days walk from home my "get home bag" is along for the ride.
I frequently travel 100 miles or more from home at a time. That can be several days walking in adverse conditions. I can always shed gear if necessary along the way, could be pretty difficult to acquire gear if it's needed.
I don't consider a 10/22 any kind of "combat" weapon...but to me it's a far sight better than no long gun at all. And most people are gonna be deterred by ANY sort of weapon pointed at them in defense. Likely not paying much attention to the size of the hole in the barrel. And I'm not gonna be looking to live off of rabbits and squirrels in that homeward trek. I'm looking for the means to get home expediently and safely. Warm, dry, and fed with what I'm carrying in my travel bag.

Frankly, short of an outbreak of Zombies with Bubonic plague, i'm bugging IN personally.
If there was really a situation where everyone is trying to run from something, how far do you think you would get during mass chaos?
You really think the Governments going to tell you the Nukes hit in 20 minutes? Or the super colossal West coast Earthquake is coming in 2 hours?
Honestly guys, what are you potentially "Bugging out" from? I just don't see the scenerio where that's a course of action personally. I agree in general principle. However, you may need to bug out if you live in the Rainier Valley. Also, if you are in the city and get hit by the big earthquake, you may need to leave for safety reasons. Having a go bag in your car is essential imo. Mine is designed to get me home. I am also prepared to leave my house if necessary, but even if the house is unsafe due to an earthquake, I can still pull stuff out and camp in the back yard. Radiation or wildfires are about the only things I would leave the home area for. Maybe if the disaster were large enough in scope to last for several years or more I would eventually head for the hills (theoretically where more game animals are located). That would be after several months at or near our house once the rations began to run low. Edit to add that I always carry or at the least have my carry piece locked in the car, so will always have a gun with me to get home with. I prefer to have a handgun, since I am accurate with it to 100yds (not moa or anything but hit man sized targets) and it wouldn't attract attention like an AR would.

I plan to bug in. My BHB is a normal laptop bag too, so does not stand out as anything other than a guy walking home, and I hope to be home before any real chaos, but bhb is set to deal with potential issues.

For me it is also about getting home, and my vehicle has plenty of gear as well as a 3-4 day pack my MPX matches ammo with my EDC which works for me. Doing a hike with your pack every couple of weeks so really helps you select your gear. Good luck on finding what works best for you! ~John
