Military mess kits?

Fri Mar 15, 2024 7:14 pm

Hey all!
Curious on people's thoughts on military mess kits.
I have made my own style kits using stainless steel components. I also own a pathfinder school kit.
But I just love the various military kits (kinda nerdy...lol)

What are your thoughts? Which ones work well? Which are worth buying?
Please share your thoughts!

Can't stand the feel and sound of aluminum and scraping utensils across it.

Went to SS from MSR and others. More weight but...

In the past, in field service operations, immersion heaters were used to heat hot water and soldiers would dunk their mess kits in a succession of garbage cans (with immersion kits inside heating water) with hot water before getting food to ensure they were somewhat clean when they got food. Sometimes there was soap and a brush. But in the early 1980s, the Surgeon General of the Marine Corps said it was unhygienic and mess kits went away. The military then went to disposable plates/utensils.

The US one is probably very similar to the one used in WW2. Other countries probably had better mess kits.

I never used a mess kit, they were before my time, but they still used immersion heaters to heat hot water for shaving in the field.

Sportsmans Guide had them a while back without utensils, got a few myself. I used my canteen cup to heat MRE pouches with a heat tab before the flameless heaters.
