And ignore anyone who says "but YoU cAn'T uSe It FoR GMRS bEcAuSe FCC"...everyone does it, nobody gets in trouble for it, and in an emergency, it won't matter. I do recommend actually getting the GMRS license, though.

After you have developed some proficiency on an inexpensive radio, you'll be better able to evaluate other potential radio purchases. Or you may find that the Baofeng is more than adequate for your needs. Either way, it's a good starter radio.

On Amazon, these are 2/$65 so its easy enough to try and set them on the shelf later. Thanks for the suggestion, I'm going to give them a try.

I'd also like to thank everyone else who responded!

I bought the Baofengs and this popped up on my Amazon list:

https://www.amazon.com/Baofeng-Radio-Re ... 145&sr=8-3

Not sure if its worthwhile, but on Kindle it as free.

You'll submit your GMRS license application. $35

Use the drop down for new license - "ZA General Mobile (GMRS)"
So, that is how you pay. Then you wait a day or two or three and they will send you an email with your callsign and license

.

Just FYI - they seem to have updated the system (they have a message in red warning you - but they don't provide a link - I had to dig around a bit). After you apply for your FRN #, you need to go to this website:

https://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsEntry/licManager/login.jsp

To complete the application and submit the fee.

Anyway I have my radios, I've paid my fee and am just waiting for my e-mail.

I want to thank OldKim for his patience in walking me through this.

Kick ass dude!

By your location, you should be able to get into Olycomm 3 with no problem.

We do nets on it Wednesday @ 6:30 & 8:30 pm, and Friday 8:00 pm.

So what is Olycomm? And how do I get to it?/

Oh DUDE! A must-know for all area GMRS users.

Olycomm 3 repeater atop E. Tiger Mtn., HUGE coverage area, as much or more traffic than ham repeaters.

Frequency: 462.625 Mhz, offset +5.0 Mhz, CTCSS tone 141.3 hz.

Basically, just use GMRS Repeater channel 18, put in the 141.3 tone, and you're set.

Lot of cool folks on it. I'll be in their "social net" tonight at 8:30pm, most likely.

Coverage area:

Yeah I've hit it from the location where we do our shooting/camping, 92 miles away.

Talk on it from all over.

If I’ve got the radio set correctly, I’ll be on listening. I’ve been using these directions to figure it out:

$10 unless you have Kindle Unlimited.

New radio alert.
I was in the right place at the right time.
So I'm sharing this with everyone.
*disclaimer... most will not like this guy's delivery but at least the radio seems good.
