A simple tool is in your hands... Your Phone.

Yes, you can save maps to your phone.
Depending on device you'll need to download an app and then save the maps you want to your phone.

For iPhone their Google Maps has a simple offline map feature. The map can also integrate with your built in phone GPS and it'll function even if there is no service in that area.

Of course, having a hard copy of maps is a bonus but who carries spare maps around?
Granted it's good practice to have hard copy maps in the car and/or home.
*I have AAA and they have free maps for members

If you do download maps.
Please note you may have to update them from time to time. I know for the iPhone it's every 29 days.
I try to upload every 2-3 weeks.

I also have maps of areas that I often hike (backup maps as it can use your GPS so you can see where you actually are not Guess where you are on a map).

Was just asking another member here if they remember Thomas Guides and if they were still printed on paper.

Also am taking a refresher orienteering class this week

I keep hard copy maps in the car (under the load floor so they're out of the way) and in the house. I also have some maps on my phone's SD card in PDF form. Paper maps are preferred around here but the digital round is handy for vacations when I'm probably not going to lug around a Thomas Guide.

Avenza works well never had to reload any of the maps. When hiking set your phone for just GPS and you can track on the maps and it saves battery. Majority of national forest topo maps are free.

I prefer paper maps. You can download topo maps for free and print them on I think it’s 8 1/2 x 14 paper and they are really nice and cheap To print at staples

I keep a Washington State Atlas in my Jeep. Great for exploring mountain roads, or finding your way around an unfamiliar city.
