Updated February 2020

*When I started making this guide I had no idea there were so many newer variants so this became a lot more detailed than I originally intended. SIG puts all other pistol manufacturers to shame (even Kimber) with their catalog variety. I threw in quite a few discontinued variants but there are dozens, perhaps I'll finish it later. Since I obviously don’t own all of these variations please let me know if a correction or addition should be made. Very little in here is authoritative and I'm sure there's a mistake (or two) somewhere.

Decided to update here in 2020 as SIG, after a decade of carrying a ton of models, really cleaned up the catalog at the end of the decade. Along the way, they muddied the waters by reintroducing old models and brought back some older manufacturing methods as well.

Quick summary descriptions (models in red are out of production as of February 2020):

P210: 9x19mm or .30 Luger, 4.7” barrel 8rnd mags (new Target models have a 5" barrel)
P220: .45 ACP (some rare early 9mm, .30 Luger, and .38 Super), 10mm, 4.4” barrel (5" for 10mm), 7/8rnd mags

Detailed descriptions:

DA/SA = Double Action/Single Action. First trigger pull with the hammer down is double action, subsequent shots are single action. Can lock hammer back manually for single action first shot.
DAO = Double Action Only. All trigger pulls are double action, hammer does not lock back.
DAK = Double Action Kellerman. Proprietary double action only system with a more consistent trigger pull than DAO.
SAO = Single action only. To fire the first shot the hammer must be back and locked, pulling the trigger with the hammer forward does nothing.
SRT = Short Reset Trigger. SIG design where subsequent trigger pulls can be made without the traditional long trigger reset.

P210
• 9x19mm or 7.62x21mm/.30 Luger 4.7” barrel 8rnd mags. Heel magazine release, SAO operation, manual safety. Made in Switzerland.
• P210 Legend 9x19mm 4.7” barrel 8rnd mags. Grip magazine release, SAO operation, manual safety, Nitron finish. Newer model (2010-present) made in Germany.
• P210A 9x19mm 5" barrel 8rnd mags. Made in USA.

P220
• 9x19mm 4.4” barrel 8rnd mags. Heel magazine release, DA/SA operation, decocker, no external safety, early model, not common.
• .38 Super 4.4” barrel 8rnd mags. Heel magazine release, DA/SA operation, decocker, no external safety, early model, very rare.
• .45 ACP 4.4” barrel 7 or 8rnd mags. DA/SA operation, decocker, no external safety. Only P220 model sold in the U.S. from about 1981-2002.
• Early guns will have a heel magazine release.
• All OLDER P220 slides with a split roll breech block retaining pin (about 1” behind the ejection port) are German-made mandrel folded carbon steel with breech block inserts and internal extractors.
• Newer P220 slides starting in the late teens began to be seen with roll pins; these are easy to tell apart from the older guns as they have an external extractor and clear Made in USA markings.
• All P220 slides with a solid breech block retaining pin (about 1” behind the ejection port) are U.S.-made milled stainless one-piece with internal (older) or external (newer) extractors. Changeover to milled stainless was later with the P220 starting around 2000.
• Available as a LEGION model.

*All DA/SA models have a decocker and no external safety.
*All DAK models have no decocker and no external safety.
*All SAO models have a manual external safety and no decocker.

P224
• 9x19mm 3.5” barrel 11rnd mags. No decocker or external safety.
• .40S&W 3.5” barrel 10rnd mags. No decocker or external safety.
• .357SIG 3.5” barrel 10rnd mags. No decocker or external safety.

P225
• 9x19mm 3.9” barrel 8rnd mags. DA/SA operation, decocker, no external safety. Known as the P6 in Germany, essentially an early model P220 9mm with a grip magazine release along with a shorter barrel and slide.

P226
• 9mm, .40S&W, or .357SIG. 4.4” barrel except for TB (threaded barrel) and X-Five models which are 5”. Older models do not have rails while all newer production models do. Ergo grips on some newer guns.
• As with the P220:
• All OLDER P226 slides with a split roll breech block retaining pin (about 1” behind the ejection port) are German-made mandrel folded carbon steel with breechblock inserts and internal extractors. These guns are only available in 9mm, one of the key reasons SIG went to milled stainless was to produce .40S&W/.357SIG versions.
• Newer P226 slides starting in the late teens began to be seen with roll pins; these are easy to tell apart from the older guns as they have an external extractor and clear Made in USA markings.
• All P226 slides with a solid breech block retaining pin (about 1” behind the ejection port) are U.S.-made milled stainless one-piece with internal (older) or external (newer) extractors. These guns (with internal extractors) started production around 1996.
• Available as a LEGION model.

*All DA/SA models have a decocker and no external safety.
*All DAK models have no decocker and no external safety.
*All SAO models have a manual external safety and no decocker.
*Extended Magazine: Standard magazines for the P226 are 15rnd 9x19mm and 12rnd .40S&W and .357SIG. Some newer models come with 20rnd 9mm or 15rnd .40S&W/.357SIG, X-Five models typically come with 19rnd 9mm or 14rnd .40S&W.

P228
• 9x19mm 3.9” barrel 13rnd mags. DA/SA, decocker, no external safety; there are some DAO with no decocker or safety. Essentially an early model P226 with reduced length slide, barrel, and grip. All are German-made mandrel rolled slides with alloy frames. If it has a split roll breech block pin it’s a P228, if it has a solid pin it’s a P229. U.S. military model M11.

P229
• 9x19mm, .40S&W, or .357SIG. 3.9” barrel. 9mm models 13rnd mags, .40S&W and .357SIG 12rnd mags. All have U.S. made stainless slides.
• Available as a LEGION model.

P230
• .32ACP or .380ACP 3.6” barrel. .32ACP 8rnd mags, .380ACP 7rnd mags. DA/SA, decocker, no external safety. Replaced by the P232 (milled stainless slide changeover) starting in 1996.

P232
• .380ACP 3.6” barrel 7rnd mags. DA/SA, decocker, no external safety. Standard, two-tone, and stainless (with stainless frame vs. alloy).

P238
• .380ACP, 2.7” barrel, 6 or 7rnd mags. SAO operation, manual safety. Essentially a mini-1911/Colt Mustang with SIG scalloped slide.

P239
• 9x19mm, .40S&W, .357SIG. 3.6” barrel. 9mm 8rnd mags, .40S&W/.357SIG 7rnd mags. All have U.S. made stainless slides with external extractors.

P245
• .45ACP 3.9” barrel 6rnd mag. DA/SA operation, decocker, no external safety; there are some DAO with no decocker or safety. Essentially a carry version of the early model P220. There are both older carbon steel and newer stainless slide P245s but all have an internal extractor, if it has an external extractor it is a P220 Compact. Much easier way to tell is look at the number on the slide --- it's either stamped P245 or P220, no guesswork needed.

P250
• .380ACP, 9x19mm, .40S&W, .357SIG, .45 ACP. 4.7” (full size) 3.9” (compact) 3.6” (subcompact) barrels, 17/14/10rnd mags (full size) 15/13/9rnd mags (compact) 12/10/6rnd mags (subcompact), DAO operation, no decocker or external safety, modular design where slides, trigger groups, and frames can be swapped and changed.

P290
• 9x19mm, 2.9” barrel, 6rnd mags. DAO operation, no decocker, no external safety. Variants include Laser, Two-Tone, Diamondplate.

P320
• 9x19mm, 4.7" barrel, 17/21rnd mags. Striker fired, with or without safety. FDE version accepted as the U.S. service pistol M17.
• Available as a LEGION model.

P320 Compact
• 9x19mm, .40S&W, .45ACP, .357SIG, 3.9" barrel, 15/13/9rnd mags. Striker fired, with or without safety. FDE version accepted as the U.S. service pistol M18.

P320X
• 9x19mm, 5" barrel, 17rnd mags. Special competition variant of the P320.

P365
• 9x19mm, 3.1" or 3.7" (XL) barrel, 10/12rnd mags. Striker fired, with or without safety.

P938
• 9x19mm, 3” barrel, 6rnd mags. SAO operation, no decocker, manual safety. Essentially a slightly larger P238 in 9mm.
• Available as a LEGION model.

SP2009
• 9x19mm, 3.9” barrel, 15rnd mags. DAO operation, decocker, no manual safety. 9mm version of the SP2340, replaced by the SP2022.

SP2022
• 9x19mm, .40S&W, .357SIG. 3.9” barrel 9mm 15rnd mags, .40S&W/.357SIG 12rnd mags. DA/SA with option to convert to DAO, decocker, no external safety. All models have a Picatinny rail.

SP2340
• .40S&W, .357SIG. 3.9” barrel 12rnd mags. DAO operation, decocker, no manual safety. First Pro series guns, replaced by the SP2022.

1911
• .45ACP, 5" barrel, 7/8rnd mags. SAO operation, manual safety. These all have external extractors and unique slide cuts that can make finding holsters difficult. They are "mostly" a true 1911.

SIG 226,229 models in .40S&W can be fitted with a 9MM conversion barrel.
SIG 226 mags can be used in the 229 but not the other way round round.
SRT can be drop in fitted in 220,226 229 and 228 DA/SA models.

Yeah I am realizing there are a ton of variants made in the last decade that didn't last long. The current production ones are easy --- they are on SIG Sauer's website. They have a handful of discontinued models on there as well. Most of the other ones I found were from trolling GB or SIG fanboy sites.

Would be a shame if a magazine restriction kills SIG's latest push to build a double stack P220. From what I understand AWB 1994 killed the "P221." Hindsight is 20/20, but why they didn't hit the market hard in 2004 or 2005 is odd since the market was definitely there and waiting. Some guys (and gals) like big handguns.

Well done.

Sig may make a lot of "variants" but one thing is common among all them. Quality and Reliability.

I sure love mine. :4couple:
