But that is the real truth. One does have to factor in the Start up cost.
You have to factor in the investment cost of getting all that stuff when you don’t have it.
The other true cost... Time
My advice is to use a buddies set and if you are hooked. Get into it.
Hands down - all major Rifle calibers are simple math beneficial.
There’s a lot of benefit of reloading your own. Saving money is really not true (in most cases).

I reload 9mm (prices above), 45 acp (about $130 per K), .357 (about $140 per K), 44 mag (about $165 per K) and .223 which costs about $175 per K. .223 is one where oldkim is right because they take me longer to load than handgun ammo and you can buy them delivered for $229 per K after rebate. The investment in equipment, especially the press is recoverable after about 5 years. I bought a Dillon 550 from Marcus323 6 or 7 years ago for $275 I have added a quick change kit for every caliber I load but look at what they cost new now... Also I have loaded close to 100,000 rounds (major savings!) so I ended up re-couping the cost of my setup in the 1st year. Now if I could only find a tumbler that lasts more than 2 years.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. At this point I don't really thing it's realistic for me to get in to reloading.
That being said, my father in law has a reloading setup that he said he'd help me use, I'd just need the dies and consumables. From the sounds of it I should just shoot a 100 rounds of 9mm this weekend and keep the brass.
Do you guys have a powder you'd recommend for standard velocity 9mm?

For 100 rounds of 9mm, you’re going to use about 6% of a single pound of powder, and that powder is going to cost you $25.
Does your FIL have any pistol powders on hand that you can use?

Sadly no, he runs a duck hunting business so he really only shoots shot guns anymore.

Many shotgun powders can also be used for pistol. If you find out what powders he has, we might be able to help.
That said, it's also going to cost you $25 (at least) to buy a set of dies, plus you'll need the shell holder ($5) or shell plate ($30?) for 9mm, depending on what press he has. Speaking of that, does he even have a press that can do 9mm, or does he only have shotgun presses?
If your plan is to load 100 rounds and then call it good . . . these are going to be the most expensive 9mm rounds in the history of man.

When I asked him about it he said that the equipment he has would work. That being said I think it's time to give it up and just have a bag of bullets for awhile :)

But . . . lots of people load 9mm, and if you find a buddy that does at some point, I'm sure he'll be happy to let you come over and load them up. Brass is essentially free, and the powder and primers will cost a total of about $5.

If you want to make the drive to Port Orchard, I'll set you up with everything you need and help you load those up. I can show you the basics and you'll be done in a half hour. I have plenty of brass/powder and primers to share if you're wanting to learn.

Now that’s a great offer!
Test the “waters”.
Having someone that can help and has the knowledge they are willing to share. That... my friend is what this “site” is all about.
Thank you!

I was going to offer too but thought the drive to Tacoma might be a deterrent.
Brujah- I have plenty of 9mm brass prepped and ready to load. You’re welcome to come load up your bullets and swap brass for what I have prepped.
I just have a single stage press right now (which is why I haven’t loaded anything, just capped and cleaned)
