Processing a batch of 7mm Rem Magnum... The cases are big and belted, pretty tough to confuse them with any of my current other calibers.
Decapping along at a pretty good pace and CLINK... "Wut!?" Pulled the case out and looked at the stamp...

Looks alright to me. That's strange.
Time to look inside, but my skinniest scope at the time couldn't fit inside a 7mm case neck. Went onto the interwebs and found one that would so let's look inside.
It felt like it was going to look like this:

But instead, it looked like this:

Couple more views with the lights changed a bit :

And to compare with another 7mm Rem Mag case's guts :

That's a pretty blue, isn't it?

I assumed that there was another case of some kind stuck inside there, like sometimes happen if a fellow mixes calibers during the cleaning... I have a Balrog who takes great delight in making improvements to my processes.
But there isn't a flashhole in whatever is down there, and .22 rimfire would rattle at least.
It is a fired 7mm Rem Mag case, so not likely to be a manufacturing defect. Gas check?
Any ideas?

That's a lot of space between the primer and the edge of the primer pocket. It looks like a low pressure round.
Take a pick and pry the fired primer out to get a look at what the primer pocket looks like.

I had to take a relook at the photo... I see what you mean. In real life it looks fine, and even trying to get better light in there doesn't work too well.

Pulling out the pick now.

Actually, it looks like a no pressure round, just the impact of the firing pin on the primer. Is this a round that you fired, or obtained from somewhere else? If the flash hole is blocked, then likely the round never fired.

It would have been shot by me or my sons, and I don't recall anyone mentioning it.
So far I've bent a pick and broken another. I wish that I had invested in one of those Berdan decappers.

Did I mail you a mystery?

^ I don't think so. I took the bullets and new-unfired cases out of that box and folded the top up.
This is one of ours, unless my little Balrog got in there.

Clean it up a little.

Cruffler the winner. Looks like no flashhole.

Which begs the question... What would the pressures be inside that primer pocket without a flashhole to flash through?
I would not have noticed the lack of flattening without your prompt. *doh* We have some smart and experienced WaGunners. :wagwoot:
Compare to the primer in a 270 sitting here on the workbench:

If it was one you or your sons fired.....how did the bullet get out?

Seems like maybe you got this one as empty brass and someone else pulled the bullet?

We took about a 10 year hiatus on reloading, but saved our brass. I am guessing that one of my sons brought it back as a dud.
2 other possibilities : I did it and Early Onset Alzheimer's has struck, or my 3 year old transferred an empty from a box that included some fired cases recently (hence the comment from OldGrowth.)
I'd blame the 3 year old, but I the timing of when I opened that box and put it away makes it unlikely.
