Mr MadPick was mocking me because I have a hard time cranking the RCBS Media Separator.
Well, it is hard! I get tired well before the pins all separate.

Anyway, I found a way past my difficulties.

Who taught her to crank it one-handed? Must have been mom.

Cute pic!!!

^ I taught her. I just did it with an empty basket, if you must know. See? a work-around!
I'll give a pic walk through of my method.

So washing brass at our place usually involves bugging the Balrog. If I forget to schedule in advance, she'll make me wait before she helps. Gah. Wimmin.
Here she is reading and ignoring me.
Image
I point out that I did ask for help when we were on the way back from the Centralia Gun Show, so she said she'd help. Thank god. Darn near breaks my arms doing this chore.
The Goods. .308 this time.
Image
Balrog uses either 1/8 or 1/4 cup of Armorall Wash&Wax, and 1 tablespoon of a citrus juice (lime right now.)
She checks the depth to make sure it's worth her time. One time I tricked her into helping me when I was only washing about half a pound of 9mm brass. She was irritated, so now she checks.
Image
"Ok, we're cool."
Image
She puts the lid on. This is one of the reasons that I need her help. It leaks like mad if I try to tighten that lid by myself.
Image
She lets me try my hand at dumping the effluvia, but keeps a close eye on me.
Image
If I get shaky from all the work, she holds the aluminum pot and says "Steady on now."
Image
Here she is giving pointers on correct water temp...
Image
"Check the temperature again! Didn't I just tell you that?!"
Image
This is why we do our pours into the aluminum pot... Works great. Allows us to not get too nervous about losing the pins down the drain.
Image
Balrog likes to make fun of me a little. Here she is mocking my 2-hand method of cranking the RCBS media separator. :facepalm2: Bragger.
Image
And then to rub it in :
Image
Rotten ingrate.
I don't know how she can keep it up this long. I collapse after 3-4 turns.
Image
Nary a pin in sight. Tough kid. Thank god I married a tough woman, or I'd have to crank that thing myself.
Image
Notice the chill beverage to her left... She doesn't even let go with the right, reaches down, takes a guzzle from the sippy cup, glares at me and slams it back down on the table.
"Whatever" I grumble.
"It's Miller Time" she responds.

Have you tried artificially "Case Hardening" with wet tumbling?
It's fun!

The two brass casings inside are case hardened (chemically) using wet tumbling.
The two outside are normal wet tumbling.

I keep two cotton hand towels and a small stack of paper towels with my media separator.
After I get done tumbling the brass, separate the pins, we have a basket of wet brass.
I put a cotton towel in the basket like a blanket, spin 180 and cover the other side. Give 15 turns, remove the 2 cotton towels and replace with about 6 of the paper towels. Spin 15 times.
This speeds up drying time a lot, and no spots.
This is right out of the separator.

All right, I'm trying a new twist on the process.

In my original process (per the video), when tumbling was complete I would pour off the water, using my hand to make sure I didn't lose any pins or brass. Then refill with some clean water, swish and pour it off, and repeat this a couple of times until most (but not all) of the soap and dirty water was gone.

Then, I poured the brass and pins into the media separator and, er, separated the media from the brass. Then I put the brass into a kitchen colander and held it under the running water until it was properly rinsed. Then, into the dehydrator for drying.

Recently I bought one of these:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/360482926395

It's a "Gold Rush Mineral Sifting Classifier Sieve Prospect Pan Screen" and I bought one with the 1/70" screen.

Today I tumbled a few batches. When tumbling was complete, I just poured the whole mess into the screen:

Then, I turned on the faucet and ran water over it and swished it around a little until it was all rinsed. Then I picked up the whole thing (with a towel underneath because it was still dripping) and walked it to the media separator. After separating, I put the brass straight into the dehydrator.

So far, so good -- it definitely eliminates a step or two. The screen is actually pretty strong; I was concerned that the weight of the pins and brass would blow out the bottom, but it seems to be just fine. I was also wondering if 1/70" was the right answer, but it works great -- the pins are WAY too big to go through the screen, but water still runs straight through it.

Good idea.

EDIT: PITA ordering - Ebay keeps hanging with Paypal. Will order later.

My pins are 0.047" so even the 1/30 screen should work. (0.033") - The other SS media - not sure of the size. I may get the 1/50" screen.

Screw Ebay. They are absolutely messed up and the phone jockey said so! She said they have been receiving a number of complaints. I cannot pay no matter the method. Wait - I have bought from ebay for 18+ years..........now they can't figure it out. Great!

I bought this: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00 ... UTF8&psc=1

Under $15 delivered. 1/30". Amazon only had 1/70" and 1/30", no 1/50". I'll let you know if the pins escape!!

50.

That might actually be a good screen, (and cheap), to use for pre-filtering waste vegetable oil to be used as diesel fuel! Of course if I did that, I'd probably get the 30, 50, 70 and 100. (All available at this link.) Still cheaper than what companies that cater to the biodiesel users, sell just one filter for.

The screen is AWESOME.

1/30" MESH is all you need. Hat is completely off to Steve. This idea is WAY better than I thought. Works for media and pins. I am washing my new oily media right now. $14.71 delivered and they gave me a gold mining pan. :thumbsup2: :thumbsup2: :thumbsup2: :thumbsup2: :thumbsup2:

My pins are 0.047".

The media chips I would need to measure I guess, but none comes through the 1/30" mesh.

Can you describe how tough / durable they seem to be?
How is the mesh "welded" into the plastic?
