Just testing the waters here...
I work for a major seafood distributor in Hawaii. We have a pretty extensive fresh seafood product line, but it's all subject to market pricing and availability. I've been thinking about how to get my hands on a few pounds of fresh fish without breaking the bank, but therein lies the rub; shipping is very expensive, so small orders are cost-prohibitive. To keep the fish cold, we have to send it 1-day or 2-day air from Hawaii, and we have to use specialized packaging materials that aren't cheap.
I can obtain employee pricing (nominal markup over cost), so if there were enough members interested in going in on a Group Buy order, we could keep the costs down and open up access to some species that are hard (if not impossible) to find on da mainland.
I would need to know that you can pick it up within 24 hours of it arriving. It would be shipped fresh, not frozen, so time is of the essence in terms of freshness.
Some examples of species we could order:
Ahi (Tuna - Bigeye or Yellowfin)* Tombo (Albacore) Aku (Skipjack tuna) Kajiki (Blue Marlin)* Nairagi (Striped Marlin)* Hebi (Spearfish)* A'u lepe (Sailfish) Shutome (Swordfish)* Ono (Wahoo)* Mahimahi* Opah (Moonfish)* Monchong (Sickle Pomfret)* Walu (Escolar)* Kaku (Barricuda) Opakapaka (Pink Snapper) Onaga (Long-tailed Red Snapper) Ehu (Short-tailed Red Snapper) Lehi (Silver-mouth Snapper) Uku (Green Jobfish/Snapper)
*Pretty much always available, though prices do fluctuate.
The minimum order for the Group is 20 pounds, but the real cost savings are realized when the order hits 40+ pounds.
We also have a fresh poke and sashimi product line, although I'm not sure how well those hold up in shipping (we only sell them locally in Hawaii right now). I'll ask my team about those.
If you have any interest, or questions, feel free to reply here or send me a PM. Thanks!

I'm checking with my wife, but I think we'd be interested. Plus she has a lot of friends in Malaysian & Singaporean communities who may also be interested.

Have interest. Do you happen to have a (fluctuating) price list?
Rough estimates are fine. Thanks!

Let me find out what the market prices were today and I'll see if I can come up with a rough price list.

How about shark? I used to get that stuff cheap ($5 per pound), now I can't find it at all. Better than swordfish, and no bones.

Wow. Very interesting. However I have never had any of those fish. Otherwise I'd be very interested.

Fresh Tuna is awesome---much better than anything you'll get out of a can or pouch. Fresh Albacore is very similar to the Tuna. it's pretty much the same as we can catch off the WA coast during the summer/fall. Ono (Wahoo) is delicious, one of the most popular and/or famous fish dishes in Hawai'i Mahi Mahi is amazing, too. Marlin is like an apex predator--very dense, full of flavor. Similar to yellowfin/bluefin tuna in a way. Swordfish is similar to Marlin in texture, but more intense flavor--kinda like shark, but not as intense... Sailfish is a bit in between Marlin and Swordfish IMHO. The snappers are similar in taste and texture to the rockfish we have here. It's all good, man. If you like fish, you'll love any of it.

Here are some rough price estimates for the pelagic (open sea) species based upon current market pricing. I think the bottomfish (snappers) are going to be on the pricier side unless we were to go with imported (non-Hawaiian origin) fish.
Ahi (Tuna - Bigeye or Yellowfin) - $13-17/lb., depending upon size and quality (grade) Tombo (Albacore) - $7-10/lb. Kajiki (Blue Marlin) - $9-12/lb. Nairagi (Striped Marlin) - $9-12/lb. Shutome (Swordfish) - $10-12/lb. Ono (Wahoo) - $7-10/lb. Mahimahi - $9-12/lb. Opah (Moonfish) - $11-14/lb. Monchong (Sickle Pomfret) - $8-11/lb. Walu (Escolar) - $6-8/lb.
Again, if you have questions, fire away! I'll do my best to answer them.
