I've been working on a Spanish Mauser for bit, making loads, thinking about what to do next. It's currently 22 5/8" from muzzle to bolt face. I've been thinking about cutting it down to 18" and putting a scout scope mount on it. Anyone ever cut one down with good results and still stabilizing bullets? To my eyes, the rifling is weaker near the muzzle and I was thinking maybe cutting it will yield better consistent accuracy.

You do good work as far as I've seen. What caliber is yours?

I have a Mosin 91/30 that someone else cut down and the thing is a tack driver. Dunno how it shot before hand.

As for mounting a scope, the mount on my Mosin was garbage and broke off. Not a lot of great scope mount options. I went back to irons, for a price.

I personally wouldn't invest the time and money in a $200 old rifle. But many love the hobby of cutting them up.

BTW they are available in 7mm Mauser and .308 for $200. Maybe spend the money on a 2nd one instead?

I haven't cut a barrel down to make a scout rifle, but I've used scope mounts that attach to the rear sight on a few rifles. These are generally used with long eye relief pistol scopes.
The fact that the rifling appears weaker at the muzzle means that the rifling is probably worn from cleaning from the muzzle end instead of the chamber. Cutting a few inches off the muzzle and re-crowning can often improve accuracy in rifles like these.

There are several brands available:

The S&K insta-mount

Darrell's scout mount (I don't know if these are still available, I bought mine years ago)

If you're handy at machining, you can try your hand at making your own

Here are two of my rifles with scout mounts, a Swiss K-31 and a VZ-24:

I bought this knowing it was a project gun.

Yes, I'm planning on getting the S&K mount and skip the machining. I'm just wondering, would it make it worse? I'm expecting a loss in velocity but, I'm already over 2400fps 160gr SGK and no where near max.

If you do a good job of re-crowning, I don't see it hurting the accuracy. Getting down to stronger rifling might help too.

In my early home gun smithing days, I cut down a Turk Mauser.
Hack saw, Filed squared, honed with a wet stone then touched up the rifling with a brass, slot head screw and some fine lapping compound.
I drilled and taped the barrel for a new front sight and the receiver for a receiver sight.
Lots of work to the stock to. But when all was done I could pop the center out of a clay pigeon at 100 yards.
I would not think you should have anything to worry about if you choose to cut down that barrel.

You guys are giving me warm fuzzies.

Lark and Steve make it look easy.

Anyone got a muzzle crowning tool for .284 that I can borrow?

I don't know if it's an accurate comparison to your Mauser, but I did cut down a Mosin to around 17" for a scout rifle. Accuracy is about as good as can be expected from an old com bloc weapon. It regularly shoots 1.5" groupings at 50 yds on surplus ammo and I never bothered to recrown the barrel.

A cool thing about Mosins is they have a small dovetail rail under the rear sight base. It's pretty similar to a .22 dovetail rail and will accept conversion mounts like this https://www.amazon.com/SNIPER%C2%AE-Pic ... AM33ZQJEEQ

I know it looks stupid/chincy but I have a similar mount on my mosin and it hasn't budged in hundreds of rounds. Maybe you could research whether or not the Mauser's have a similar dovetail under the rear sight. I have a micro red dot mounted currently but I've seen guys have great success with long eye relief scopes mounted on those bases.

ETA-- Here's a 5.7" rail that would provide a little better spacing for the scope rings http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... lsrc=aw.ds

Removing worn rifling will improve accuracy IF the new crown is clean and level.

Well I'm ready to jump all in it now. Just need to barrow a barrel crowning tool....or else I'm spending more than the cost of the rifle on a tool that I'll likely not use for many years to come.

I currently have the Mauser torn down except the bolt, and there's no notch under the rear sight. It's a pined in leaf that goes up like the shoulder thing on a Mosin caliber clipozine.

Having just purchased iron sites, my advice is to keep the site around, or sell it, or PIF it.

The mosin rear leaf site is also pinned in. Some people report that removing the pin is a breeze, some people start with a torch and end up on a drill press.

Great Project dreadi. I normally don't care for sporterizing old Military rifles, but hey, it's just a Spanish Mauser.
Hack that bitch, dress the muzzle and go for a clamp on mount with EER scope. I have personally used the Darrell's mount mentioned above and it worked great.
I had it on a Finnish M39 with no other modifications and it was a Tack driver as well. Most Scout mounts are clamp on and don't alter the weapon so it can be returned to issue status.
Sounds like a cool project.
