These raceway action wrenches are often super handy. I also have the other type that clamps around the outside, but usually grab this one first just for ease of use. Maybe I should just retire it to installing, but not removing, barrels. :eek:

What action? Looks like cast steel. Repair that with 4140 handles

Not cast, but probably drill rod or something like that. Seems hard, and didn't bend, just broke.
I think what I'll end up doing is machining a hex into the end of the wrench, and then use a socket and breaker bar for now on.

Failure doesn’t look that brittle. Looks more like it was a heat affected zone failure from welding.

Yup, cracked from welding. I twisted an upper with the clamp style, so be careful.

It certainly was a HAZ failure, as you can still see all of the weld on the lug, and none of the rod. Still, if it's wasn't brittle at the break, I'm not sure what I'd call it.
I think on the clamp style wrenches, if you're up close to the threads and not trying to transfer the torque from one end of a receiver to another, you should be OK. I've never had that problem before. Generally, I clamp the barrel as close to the shoulder as I can get it, and then clamp the action wrench as close to that as I can go. I set my barrel vice up so it's right on the edge of the bench.
