I have a few C&R semi-auto rifles, and they are right at the top of my list for "fun to shoot." I'll post pics up here, one at a time, over the coming days. I invite discussion, comments, questions . . . and I invite you to post your own! Let's show off that old-timer firepower! :ymparty:

I'll start with my SVT-40, which is probably my favorite of the lot. This is chambered in 7.62x54R, the same caliber as a Mosin rifle, but it is a LOT easier to shoot, with much less recoil. The rifle is relatively light, and has a 10-round magazine.

My rifle was made in 1940 at the Izhevsk arsenal. On to the pics:

For a little historical reference, here's a photo of a German soldier firing a captured SVT-40:

Anyone else . . . ?

Wow...that's sick. Makes me want to get my C&R even more! How much would one of those (in reasonable condition) set you back?

Well, you don't need to have your C&R license to get one . . . the C&R just makes it easier to buy from out-of-state because you don't need to go through a regular FFL.

I paid $775 for this one, just last year. I'd say that's on the lower end of the price range; I see them going anywhere from $750 to $1100. So, it's pricey compared to your average Mosin but still not outrageous, as decent firearms go.

I had a super clean SVT-40 all numbers matched minus the mag made in 1941. I kept it around for a while but never got up the nerve to shoot it. Not scared, just didn't want something to break. I ended up selling it a while back for $850 I believe. These are great guns. I have talked to the new owner as he is a member of a firearms board...he says it shoots great and is one of his favorites.

Okay, I'm going to throw up #2 . . . an Egyptian Hakim:

Most of the writing is in Arabic; if you translate the numbers, you can see that it was made in 1964. Translating the numbers from Arabic isn't really rocket science -- just look at the numbers on the rear sight, which are of course from 1 to 10. You can then look at the date mark and see the 1, 9, 6, 4 in Arabic. (You can barely see the date, with the serial number below it, on the left side of the receiver.)

This rifle is chambered in 8mm Mauser, and has a ten-round magazine. You can see the odd action type . . . no matter how many times I shoot it, I still have to play with it to get it right! This sucker can make your Garand Thumb look like a mosquito bite if you're not careful, too . . . .

Anyone else? Come on, I know at least one of you has an SKS or a Garand or an M1 Carbine . . . . b-)

Alright. For semi-auto I've got your Garand and the Carbine covered.

Garand First-

Nice gun, heavy as hell, but packs some punch. Fun to shoot. It's a springfield. I did the research at one time to figure out when it was made, but I can't remember now. I believe it was early in the war.

.30 Carbine- One of my personal favorites. VERY light, can use 30rd mags.
You can see the size difference in the pics. (Garand vs Carbine)

There you go! Couple of old but good fun Rifles. I have shot them both and they are fully operational. Some of my favorites.

Wow . . . kgbsucka, those are some nice-looking rifles! I'd love to have a Garand that was made during the war.

Where did you get them? Are they CMP?

Okay, I'm going to switch it up a bit . . . from those beautiful rifles that kgbsucka posted to one that looks a little rattier! (Which is why I like it.)

Here's my Romanian SKS, dated 1958. As most of you know, this has a 10-round fixed magazine and is chambered in 7.62x39.

See how so much of the metal finish is worn? Looks pretty crappy, right? Well, that's the part that really lights my fire -- I love that look! I can't say that this rifle really has that BFPU (battlefield pick-up) look, but at least the metal has it. Here's a better closeup:

Image

Can anyone top that in the crappy department?

Let's go back to Egypt!

Here's an FN-49, built by FN in Belgium and sold to the Egyptians. This is chambered in 8mm Mauser and has a 10-round magazine that, like many of the other rifles in this thread, can be fed using stripper clips. My best guess is that this rifle was made in the early 1950s, but I don't know how to pin down the exact year.

Image

Image

Here's the left side of the receiver; you can see the serial number in both Arabic and Roman numerals:

Image

And here's a little brass plate on the stock. The Arabic writing means . . . well, honestly I have no clue what it means! However, after comparing the numbers on the top with the numbers on the sight, I finally concluded that the brass plate is upside-down, so I spun it 180° after taking the photo!

Image
I'm embarrassed that I bought this rifle on February 10th and haven't fired it yet. Maybe this weekend, though!

Next? Even a cell phone pic?

Today's addition . . . my M1 Carbine! This is a Quality Hardware carbine, made in 1943. As far as I can tell, it's relatively unmolested, though with carbines it's hard to be sure. I do know that the slide was replaced by the previous owner.

As you can see, it does not have a bayonet mount, and it has the old-style flip rear sight. This means that it was not re-arsenaled; all of the re-arsenaled guns received these features. (That's my understanding . . . please correct me if you know differently.)

At first I assumed that the stock had been refinished due to the gloss on it, but then I saw pictures of another Quality Hardware carbine that was supposedly original and had a similar finish . . . so I'm not so sure anymore.

Every time I pick up this carbine, I am amazed at how light it is, and I can just FEEL the history . . . I love it. :D

Shooting it is a different story. Honestly, I find it a little boring to shoot, probably because of the relatively small cartridge and the light recoil.

Next? :!!

Hmmm, that username is starting to make sense now . . . . 8-)

Thanks for playing, usrifle! It's great to have you in this thread.

I still have my measly one Garand to post, sometime in the coming days. But what it lacks in quantity, it makes up for in quali . . . errr, maybe not. But I'm gonna post it anyhow. :-P
