Hi Chuck, I can heartily recommend the Beginner/Intermediate Pistol Match at Capital City. Match is run by Ron Lohman who is a great guy, excellent teacher, very patient, and runs a very safe match. This was the first competition I ever went to and consider myself very lucky for that.
Match is on 2nd Sat of each month. There is a SA revolver category at 8am but main match starts at 9am. You can shoot anything 38 special / 9mm or bigger (within reason). Combination of paper targets and steel plates, plate racks, texas star, etc. There is also frequently a run 'n gun stage in the summer months which is typically optional although Ron is great at walking beginners through safety considerations, timing, number of shots fired/remaining, etc.
Your first match as a new shooter will involve a safety check-out by one of the senior shooters prior to entering the match for any basic gun safety handling, range commands, and holster/draw safety.
You'll need 50-100 rounds to run the match plus a few extra for safety checkout. If you need any gear (gun, holster, ammo) then just contact Ron via the CCRPC website and that can all be arranged couple days ahead of time.
Enjoy, Dave

Hi Chuck, I forgot the other option to consider is Firearms Academy of Seattle in Onalaska. A bit farther drive but they run IDPA matches and also a 3 Gun match. Plus Marty and Gila run a great training program with excellent instructor cadre and an awesome training facility. http://www.firearmsacademy.com/Have fun, Dave
