making a legal short barrel rifle

Does anyone know if there's a legal way for someone to assemble their own short barrel rifle and have it registered with treasury ? Or does one have to buy them already assembled?

You can do a Form 1 (make your own) or a Form 4 (buy already made from someone else).

Seems the easiest way to do a form 1 currently is to visit a FFL with a SilencerShop kiosk. Not sure exactly how it works (magic) but pretty sure it's a one stop process.

Form 1 is pretty simple. Get a set of passport photos and fingerprints, then fill out the form which you can download from the ATF website. Mail a copy of the form with a check for $200, photos, and fingerprints to the ATF and a copy to your local sheriff or police chief. Then wait 9-10 months and you get a stamp in the mail and your original form back.

The process was not nearly as hard as I expected it to be. It’s just a long wait.

You can go thru the rigamarole of doing a trust, if your situation warrants it. But for me, it didn’t make much sense.
