I have the opportunity to buy an old AAC silencer with the 18T mounting system for what seems like a pretty good deal. For those with one or have experience with one, I am wondering if that mount is as terrible as everyone says/said it is? Does that spring retainer keep the silencer from backing off or do you really need to monitor it and constantly check/tighten it when you shoot? Is it worth the extra money to just get the 51T mount or a standard thread mount?

The 51t has some serious flaws, I can only imagine the 18t is worse. My advice would be keep saying and buying a suppressor with a modern QD system. If you want to stay AAC then get something with 91t. Otherwise would recommend the SilencerCo ASR mount, Dead Air, Rugged, etc.

The AAC mounting system is ok. Thats all, just OK. I wouldnt buy anything with 18T at this point as it is quite dated. Honestly I would avoid the 51T and 91T as well and go with another company with better/more modern mounts. The 51T was good when it came out but there has been a lot of new designs since than that are better.

I like my 51T mounts, but that's because I use silencerco's MAAD version and not AAC's spring/ratchet crap.

I have the 51t on three different rifles. (for the 762sd) and have been using it for about 5 years with no problem with it getting lose or backing off at all.The only problem i have had if i shoot alot of dirty ammo it a little tougher to get off because of the carbon build up

Thanks for all the replies. I think I'm going to just save up a little more and get something with a better mounting system.

Ive got an 18T 762SD, had it since 2008 at least. Only issue I ever had was mounted on a M1A , just mild end cap strike. Went back to AAC for a check up. Got the end cap fixed and the replaced the spring and refinished it while they had it. Id buy another one.

The AAC system is great. I use the crap out of mine and have had zero issues. Some reports say the ratchet wears out. the key is to depress the release fully when removing. Nothing wrong with a good deal.

I run 51T mounts on my SCAR-17/AAC 300blk barrels with my SDN-6. Works fine, stays tight, never a baffle strike.
