Cool news. IA Legislature has passed a bill legalizing suppressors in The Hawkeye state. Now it goes to the Governor's office who has indicated he will sign it: https://www.nraila.org/articles/20160322/iowa-hearing-protection-act-passes-concurrence-votehttp://americansuppressorassociation.com/blog/If signed, IA becomes the 42nd state to legalize suppressor ownership. In recent years WA, MN, and now IA have all removed additional state restrictions on silencer ownership.

Got me to ask - where is it not... Quote: The following jurisdictions have explicitly banned any civilian from possessing a suppressor: California, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island,[43] and the District of Columbia.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suppressor#United_StatesAnd just for historical purposes. Washington State - it was legal to own a suppressor (aka silencer) before 2011 but not legal to shoot it until 2011 when the state law changed (so you could own it and more importantly you can shoot it).

There's been recent movement in Illinois and, surprisingly, Massachusetts to legalize suppressor ownership as well. I'd expect a long, uphill battle in these anti-gun bastions though.
I know CA and HI basically ban ownership of any NFA items for civilians.

I know CA and HI basically ban ownership of any firearmitems for civilians. Fixed that for you :) But really more and more states are realizing suppressors aren't bad. Its just sad we cant seem to get movement on getting them off the NFA list. Treat them like regular firearms, ie background at time of sale, instead. Which lets be honest...other than a 200 tax and long ass wait that's all the ATF does anyways.

Suppressor ownership and use in hunting now legal in Iowa. Governor Branstad today signed the Iowa Hearing Protection Act with Iowa now becoming the 42nd state to legalize suppresor ownership, effective immediately: https://www.nraila.org/articles/20160331/nra-backed-suppressor-legislation-becomes-iowa-lawhttp://americansuppressorassociation.com/iowa-suppressor-ownership-and-hunting-now-legal/Culmination of several years of effort in the IA legislature.

Good for Iowa. Bad for the NFA which means they are about to the flooded with forms to approve. Which also means wait times rise.

Some countries encourage suppressor use.
