Hey Folks, My apologies if this is listed elsewhere (and I'm sure it is), but I'm having a hard time sorting thru all the information.
I think that I might want to form 1 my bolt action pistol, and then put a real stock on it. I'm here in Washington.
Do the marking requirements spec where on the gun the markings need to be? Ideally, I'd much rather mark the aluminum chassis. The action is already getting kinda crowded with markings.
Thanks for your insights!

Good question. Per my understanding the serialized receiver of the firearm is the part that needs to be engraved with your info. For most of mine that was the lower receiver but my Stribog the upper is considered the “receiver” and was the part needing to be engraved. ETA: sheesh, now that I read more the info seems to be all over the place. Some people saying “frame, receiver, barrel or slide” some saying receiver only. Clear as mud. I’ll keep digging. ETA2: this is the most definitive thing I can find on actual ATF regulation for firearms marking when creating (while stupid, I believe adding a stock is technically “creating” since it is now considered a rifle) a new firearm. This states “frame or receiver.” https://regulations.atf.gov/478-92/2023-01001#478-92

Well, now what is the difference between a frame and a receiver? In my case, I can see where the body of the Solus action is the 'receiver', and it bears the serial number from Aero. But, before adding a 'stock' to the rear picatinney section of the chassis, is the chassis actually a 'frame'? If I can mark the 'frame or receiver', well, I don't know. Do those two parts automatically mean the same thing?

Thanks for your insights! Yes, and the firearm has to be marked. Unless somehow the chassis in your setup is the firearm, it's going to be more crowded. https://www.atf.gov/firearms/docs/undef ... 6/downloadBLACK HAMMER ARMS 07/02 NFA Dealer http://www.blackhammerarms.comhttp://www.facebook.com/blackhammerarmshttps://www.instagram.com/blackhammerarms

Do those two parts automatically mean the same thing? There is no difference. The chassis is not frame or receiver, the action is. There is no barrel, so the action in a chassis is like a AR lower with any configuration of receiver extension and not/never having an upper. The way I understand it the firearm has either a frame or receiver, not both In general handguns have frames and long guns have receivers. Now if a rifle identifies as a handgun I don't think it's receiver automatically becomes a frame https://regulations.atf.gov/478-12/2023-01001#478-12As far as marking goes you just need name and location on the frame or receiver (same part that's already engraved with Aero's info) Pretty sure caliber can be on the barrel if you actually plan on putting a barrel on it. I haven't done one in while so not sure if that changed

Ah! Thank you! That makes for all the explanation I need. I'd prefer to not have it on the Solus but on the chassis, but the Solus is clearly a receiver since it's a variant of a rifle, it'll get the marking.

I recently inquired at Sound Loan about form 1 SBR, they said to add engravings inside mag well.
