Did you put oil in the striker channel? That's a no no.

Not intentionally, as I know about that. However, there was some goo on the striker and I think that was causing the light strikes.

As for the problem with it not even cocking, I think there was goo around the sear, and this didn’t allow the sear to come up quickly enough to catch the striker.

ALG go juice is pretty anti gumming. I used it in the wife's pistol and it has stayed thin and slick for well over a year.
I don't think it cleans like CLP though, so you'd have to clean then lube with ALG.

Or use whatever you're using, like CLP, more often.

Should have bought a Glock. I saw this forum member had a nice Glock 37 awhile ago, heard it was a good shooter.

I shoot my carry piece at least twice a month or more.

I want to positively know that both the gun AND I are working properly.

I shoot my carry all the time also, but I can shoot anywhere on my property.
I do not clean my carry weapon, a Glock, all the time though. I clean it about once a month when I'm cleaning something else and have the stuff out.

This is why you need a hammer fired weapon. LOL - SIG, CZ, HK, 1911, revolver...

That said, I really like the Slip 2000 products. Never seen that lube gum up.

Slip 2000 EWL - striker fire slides just get a patch wipe down of everything with EWL. If extremely cruddy, brake cleaner, then EWL.

Slip 2000 EWG - on slide rails, and a little on the barrel & barrel hood, cycle and wipe off excess.

Gumming can still get you, hammer matters not, if the action/slide gums and will not cycle freely on a semiauto. The gun Steve mentioned that I had issue with was a DA/SA hammer fired gun. The slide had more drag than normal and it resulted in a missfeed on 4th round. I emptied the gun and racked the slide and could feel that it was not as smooth and free as usual. A drop of oil when I got home and it was greased lightning again, though the gun is getting a deep clean this week and then super light lube.

So those that do a super deep clean, or even use a sonic cleaner, what sort of cleaning agent do you use?

Hoppe's cleaner, followed by Hoppe's oil. We only recently switched to the Hoppe's oil, the stuff we used previously was also fine but they were out of it last time and now I can't remember what it was. I prefer to err on the slightly thinner side to avoid things getting too gummy or turning dust and random particulates into paste. Fix any perceived thinness issues by checking once a week (assuming it hasn't been shot and cleaned in the meantime) and reapplying a drop here or there if things look to have dried out.

Oh, and no SD/HD gun sits in our house dirty longer than 24 hours. If it won't be cleaned immediately after returning from the range, then it goes into the safe inside a Ziploc bag and something that's clean comes out to take its place. Dirt is just one more thing that could cause a malfunction. I don't like malfunctions, so keeping dirt out of the picture is worth it to me.

I still use CLP on the regular and every year or two I'll use froglube... but I second the question on lube in the striker channel.

I also fire all of my carry rotation and HD guns at least once every 3 months. Admittedly, I don't always clean my HD guns right after... this thread may change that.

I use high temp bearing grease installed with a dental syringe. I carry a Glock 19, and have never had one issue with gumming. It's easy to clean, and easier to apply.

Well since it's a bedside gun, just keep it tucked between your thighs at night to keep it warm so the lube doesn't stiffen up.

Seriously though, this is a great example for everybody, and is exactly the type of reason I reject the sometimes recommended MO of having two duplicate pistols, one for practice and one for carry. I don't want to rely on a gun I haven't shot recently; all sorts of stuff can go wrong over time.

The real way to prevent it happening again of course is to shoot it regularly, even just a single mag every month or two can confirm it's still working right.

As for cleaning it, I always test fire after cleaning my carry gun. I generally clean it every few thousand rounds whether it needs it or not. My "deep cleaning" is pretty simple - strip the slide off and spray the frame/slide internals with an oil-based solvent like mineral spirits, then blow it all out with compressed air. Sometimes it takes twice, but gets everything surprisingly clean for those who haven't tried this method. Then re-oil and assemble.
