I built my 1st AR back literally a month before SH happened. It was a budget build, SAA receivers, whatever cheap 16" barrel SAA had at the time, etc. That barrel has just never shot well. I have had multiple people shoot it, run 55grn-70grn bullets over numerous loads and it is just a 4-5moa barrel. It is 1:9twist.

Looking to finally upgrade the barrel. I am not looking to spend $300 on just a barrel, but I want decent. I already have a 6.5 grendel with 18" that is my precision AR and shoots submoa. I am thinking 16 or 18", something chambered to shoot both milsurp 556 and regular 223. I do not "need" submoa, but want something that shoots well. Something I could take out yote or prairie dog hunting and hit what I aim at to 200yrds, not hit 5" left one shot and 5" high the next.

Anything you guys could recommend? Brand, length, twist? Thinking the $150 range for just barrel.

For the money, I've never had a complaint about the Aero (Ballistic Advantage) barrels.

I would take Ron's advice. He builds straight shooting ARs. (I've been lucky enough to shoot a few of them)

Recommendations on twist? I am usually shooting 55-63grn, moving toward 55grn more right now due to super common, but nice to be flexible and able to shoot heavier as well...

223 wylde in 1:8 with a 5R twist and a melonite finish would be my choice for those bullet weights. AR performance makes nice stuff. Can't go wrong with Ballistic advantage either.

:plusone:

Take a look at Black Hole Weaponry (now Columbia River Arms), too. They make great barrels. I'm very please with mine (.223 Wylde 1:8 w/ nitride finish).

You can even configure your own barrel: http://columbiariverarms.com/configure-your-custom-barrel/
Your choice of caliber, barrel length, twist rate, gas system length, barrel profile, thread pitch, fluting, & finish.

Larue stealth. Imo the best under 250.

Aero Precision 16" 223 wylde stainless barrel
at 50 yards with 4x scope and factory PPU 556 ammo

considering what it's supposed to be (lightweight) I'm quite pleased

I bought a 20" stainless 1:8 twist in 223 wylde from Bear Creek Arsenal for a budget plinker and it will shoot 1MOA with factory PPU 55gr, and .75 or better with 62gr handloads all day long and I've run it back to 600 yards so far. It also shoots 75 and 77gr rounds very well, though some of the lighter 45gr ones come out a bit too hot and groups open up I noticed.
They were on sale when I bought it so I paid under $80, but they usually have deals on 16-20" barrels. Definitely not as high quality as some of the $250+ barrels I've seen, but also no where near the cost, and for my purposes (target and varmint straight pull rifle) it has worked out very well.
