Maybe they feel that the current law doesn't provide for enough penalties and frequent enough prosecution. By making it a felony all in it's own takes a straw purchase out of the arena of just "lying on a Federal Form". Let's push for a law of our own. Make it a felony for law enforcement and prosecutors that fail to fully enforce EXISTING gun laws. Enhancements for crimes committed using a gun, by convicted felons in possession of firearms, etc, will no longer be bargained away, charging instead with misdemeanor or crimes that only get a couple years in prison. Strict enforcement that sends a clear message to those who would use a firearm to commit crime will cost them dearly. There was once a time when this was the case. Enforcement and penalties were such that strong arm robbers or burglars wouldn't have a gun in their possession. They are "saving up". They are trying to make up enough laws that eventually even looking at a gun can get you the death penalty. THEN... Kind of like "Double Secret Probation" in the movie Animal House Still wondering if there is a legit reason. It's seen all the time when a State Law is also written into City Ordnance. Allows City to prosecute under their ordinance rather than State, etc. May make a difference in penalties etc although firearm law has been preempted here in WA by Legislature to prevent this.
