Lawmakers move to make straw purchasing a crime

This NOT from the Onion.

Quote:
A bipartisan bill was filed in the U.S. Senate last week to establish straw purchasing as its own class of federal crime.

Senators entered S.1185, the Stop Illegal Trafficking in Firearms Act of 2017, intending to increase public safety by punishing and deterring firearms trafficking. Backed by Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt. and Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, the bill would make straw purchasing a crime of its own, a move its sponsors argue is needed.

I had to read that twice and rubbed my eyes and read it again thinking I missed something. :whatthe:

Why don't they go ahead and outlaw homicide? It seems the current laws are not enough, we need more laws to stop the criminals from breaking the law

Whenever I read nonsense like what "they" just introduced, I always think of this:

Why do we need 30,000 laws to cover ten commandments?

Maybe they feel that the current law doesn't provide for enough penalties and frequent enough prosecution.

By making it a felony all in it's own takes a straw purchase out of the arena of just "lying on a Federal Form".

Let's push for a law of our own. Make it a felony for law enforcement and prosecutors that fail to fully enforce EXISTING gun laws. Enhancements for crimes committed using a gun, by convicted felons in possession of firearms, etc, will no longer be bargained away, charging instead with misdemeanor or crimes that only get a couple years in prison.

Strict enforcement that sends a clear message to those who would use a firearm to commit crime will cost them dearly.

There was once a time when this was the case. Enforcement and penalties were such that strong arm robbers or burglars wouldn't have a gun in their possession. Getting caught with one meant lots of prison time, far more than for the actual crime they were committing.

There is something that seems to be becoming clearer, as time goes on.

They are "saving up".

They are trying to make up enough laws that eventually even looking at a gun can get you the death penalty.

THEN... Oboy will they crack down and enforce....

Yeah, Its crazy as hell but I've always thought the ten years for being a straw purchaser was for filling out a false 4473?

THIS IS A GOOD THING...LONG TIME COMING.

"As of 05/22/2017 text has not been received for S.1185 - A bill to increase public safety by punishing and deterring firearms trafficking."

Does anyone have the official bill text?
Not just what some lying blowhard is saying?

And as for redundant firearm laws?
Must have 30,000 of them.
Need less, not more.

Kind of like "Double Secret Probation" in the movie Animal House

Still wondering if there is a legit reason. It's seen all the time when a State Law is also written into City Ordnance. Allows City to prosecute under their ordinance rather than State, etc. May make a difference in penalties etc although firearm law has been preempted here in WA by Legislature to prevent this.

Who know's what the Fed's are up to or if they even know what they're doing. :facepalm2:
