While clearing out the garage of my father in law's house (per his request), we found this bolt, which is clearly to a rifle. This goes to none of the firearms we own, and as far as we know, Kevin (FIL) doesn't own any.

Anyone know what this is? We are stumped. It had to have been there for several years, yet it doesn't look worn....

Picture of the bolt face? Center fire or rim? A diameter of what size brass would fit?

It looks like a .22 bolt to me as well, it reminds me of my brother's tube fed Remington (can't remember the model), or the Glenfield I sold a while back.

"The right of self defence is the first law of nature: in most governments it has been the study of rulers to confine this right within the narrowest limits possible. Wherever standing armies are kept up, and the right of the people to keep and bear arms is, under any colour or pretext whatsoever, prohibited, liberty, if not already annihilated, is on the brink of destruction." - St. George Tucker

For society does not control crime, ever, by forcing the law-abiding to accommodate themselves to the expected behavior of criminals. Society controls crime by forcing the criminals to accommodate themselves to the expected behavior of the law-abiding." - Jeff Snyder

Personal weapons are what raised mankind out of the mud, and the rifle is the queen of personal weapons. The possession of a good rifle, as well as the skill to use it well, truly makes a man the monarch of all he surveys. It realizes the ancient dream of the Jovian thunderbolt, and as such it is the embodiment of personal power. For this reason it exercises a curious influence over the minds of most men, and in its best examples it constitutes an object of affection unmatched by any other inanimate object.

That looks to be the rear portion of the bolt and it appears cocked. After firing it would fit down in that little recess area..... My 2cents. Not sure the gun either, but looks to be a rimfire bolt. The size of the bolt makes me think rimfire. Centerfire bolt would likely be larger diameter.

That's actually the part that reminds me most of my brother's Remington .22. But I'd also agree without a picture of the bolt face we're guessing as to caliber. I remember taking it apart as a kid to clean it for him when my brother was in Viet Nam, and had to learn how to put it together from wear marks when I couldn't remember how it went back together (successfully I might add, he never knew it'd been in pieces and I think he still shoots it with his grand kids).

Thanks for the responses, guys. Kevin just got home from a trip to the coast, tomorrow I'm going to show him the bolt and ask if he's been missing it lol. It looked like it hadn't moved from that spot in a long time.
