Not a fan of "cast anything" when it comes to firearms. OK for Frying Pans, Engine Blocks, and such. For a firearm slide??????? Glad you're OK. Having something break and hit you while it's in front of your face could have turned out way different

Anything other than a .22 and it would have been bad. I looked online and found a number of those P22's with broken slides at that same location. Curious as to what the Ruger versions slides are made from. I have two p22's and am now slightly concerned as they are my wife and sons pistols. I will be examining them closely before and after every use. I think these broken slides have been with high round count guns, but need to look into that further. It appears that Walther did a design change on the slides at some point, but I don't know when that began. Hopefully they take care of Steve and he gets more info about the problem and any design change.

One thing I have to wonder about these P22's failing, is at around what round count and how often are the recoil springs replaced? Would replacing the recoil springs say every 5k rounds make a difference?

I've never replaced a recoil spring but again I have broken more of these than most people have guns... My failures usually ran in the 20,000-25,000+ range

I've never replaced a recoil spring but again I have broken more of these than most people have guns... My failures usually ran in the 20,000-25,000+ range I saw a Jimenez J-22 (Jennings) slide fail at 14-15k. When sent back to the factory (they wanted to see the entire gun and document it) their engineer suggested that had the recoil spring been changed out every few thousand rounds it might have ran on forever. Might be worth trying with the P-22? I want to get a P-22, but I have a moral objection to paying that price for zamac, plastic and a name.

I'm neither surprised nor discouraged by this. Does that make me weird? (Like I need a reason)

Well, it's been almost 48 hours and I'm getting pretty fucking tired of companies that don't reply to my emails, especially when I'm doing it THEIR way, from THEIR website. (Yeah, most of my ire is directed at ASC, the magazine people.) So anyhow, I just called Walther. I was on hold for less than a minute, then I talked to Mark who was super-helpful. I told him I was shooting and the slide broke. The first thing he said was, "What's your email address?" The second was, "What's your mailing address?" And just like that, a FedEx label was in my email inbox. Mark asked me to ship back just the slide; my assumption is that they'll replace the slide for me. We'll see, I guess.

I bet you'll get a new slide... Hopefully before the end of the year, you have bad luck waiting on companies to ship stuff to you.

Mark is the guy the local Walther rep told me to call if I ever needed anything Walther related, so things should be good.

Doubtful. Only Ruger I own (and ever will) is a 10/22 I bought back in the late 70's. As for the P-22 issue, here's a thread that offers a good solution. A simple O-Ring Buffer that stops the "hammering" when the slide is forced back fully. http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=435677

Thanks for that. I used to spend a lot of time on rimfirecentral; user 1917-1911M is one seriously helpful dude when it comes to the P22.
