The first gun that I ever bought as an adult was my nice little Walther P22. I bought this in 2008, and it has been a champ; nice a reliable, and fun to shoot. I've heard of a lot of problems with P22s, but mine never exhibited any of those issues.

Until today.

I went to the range with Mr. and Mrs. usrifle, and we had a total of three P22s on the table. I picked mine up, started shooting, and on round #10 the slide came flying back and hit me. icon_eek

It's too late in the day to call, but I emailed Walther. Hopefully they'll take care of me . . . we'll see.

Zamac alloy. Same as a Jennings or Lorcin. They'll probably send you a new slide.

I believe S&W provides warranty coverage on those as they are the importer.

Well, I've been considering one of these or a Ruger SR22 for my kids. ZAMAK < aluminum. Congrats Ruger!

They used to. I called S&W today, and they referred me to Walther USA.

I see the problem right there ---- how'd you manage to get a 45 round loaded into a 22 mag?????

I was trying to figure out how the slide could come backwards..??... until I saw the crack at the front of the hood that should prevent it. Damn - that sucks. Thinking there is an issue with the can ?
How do you know if you have squib when you are shooting with a can?

I don't think so. This is a fixed-barrel gun, so the barrel and can just sit there while the slide goes back and forth.

I think it's just a matter of a slide made from shitty metal. It broke right at the hole for the front sight, so maybe there was a weak spot there. This isn't the first P22 slide to break . . . or even the 1000th.

I've had over 5 - P22... long story. But typically when my slide broke it was fractured along the slide lock/release.

If you shoot it enough it will fail. At one time I had 3 down for different issues. I didn't want to be down 3 guns so I finally put the working parts together and sent back a broken P22. The folks at S&W at the time after looking at it... just sent me a new gun.

Granted I was shooting over 25,000 rounds with over 14 magazines at the time. (.22 was about $0.02 per round back then...)
So when I was shooting... 12-14 magazines and then rest to reload. Lots of stress.... to say the least.

Out of all the repairs... the hammer spring was my most frequent issue but I've broken at least 4 slides too but not like that...

Didn't you say... you caught the slide when it came back at you? Now that's :thumbsup2:

I know a guy who got 14k rounds out of a Jennings, and he figures if he had changed out the recoil spring somewhere in that time it probably would have gone longer. 25k rounds out of what if it had any name other than "Walther" on it would be dismissed as a Saturday Night Special is pretty damn good!

This is making me realize that I just don't shoot enough. Machines break. So far I have had zero mechanical failures of any of my firearms. I have less firearms than Steve, therefore mine come around in rotation more often. Each individual firearm should get more use but clearly doesn't. I have also been collecting and shooting since 92'.
