What a horrible human tragedy. In all accounts. Theft of a couple dollars of junk food resulted in a death and a man going to prison, ruining his life, probably hundreds of thousands of dollars in losses, and hardship for several families. Horrible horrible horrible.
I do think the Judge gave a heavy handed sentence given the lack of apparent intent, emotional reaction to an assault, etc. I'd have given a far lesser sentence if it was his first offense.
