I had a professional fix the stock in the vintage Savage 99 .250-3000 from 1913. Bill resides in Tri-Cities, I'll do a write up on him on the other forum. There was a noticeable chunk missing out of the toe of the stock. I sent Bill a sacrificial 99 stock that was never used. He sliced and diced it and match it match nicely. After 4 weeks the stock was returned. I then sanded the stock smooth enough to retain the character of it's history and not fill every flaw. 2400 cloth grip. (Bill had already done an excellent job bringing it smooth and retain the character of minute character flaws) I began with diluted brown walnut stain but soon realized I needed to match the forearm wood (which was not stripped, it was in excellent shape) So I darkened the wood with 100% stain (water based) Then I applied its first coat of Tung oil in this case. Its got a wet look at the moment. Can you see the repair? This is from about 12" view point from stock. I like how Bill maintained the perch belly. I just love how grains of wood you couldn't see jump out with a coat of oil on it. Should be done in a week or so. Bill's shop-->Back home-->

He did a very nice job indeed! I did a Toe repair on an M44 some years ago, but i didn't even care about using Birch for the repair, i used Poplar from Home depot. Check page 5 of this thread. While i have some decent woodworking skills, it really wasn't too difficult and turned out well. You have skills, maybe try it on a less desirable Rifle for practice like i did. viewtopic.php?f=40&t=48444&hilit=Toe+repair&start=60

Poor lighting in this Cell phone photo, but you can see I was matching the color and finish of the original the forearm(matching numbers) with the new finish... the forearm stock was baby butt smooth, no varnish, probably the original Savage finish (did they use Tung oil in 1913?Anyone know what they used?) I got the color pretty close,eh? I will snap better photos with everything buttoned up in a week.

very nice. Honestly? While I'm impressed with the job laying out stain and finish...it's a little too red. forearm has no red in it.

Yeah, I hoping that red tinges out as the Tung oil absorbs and dries. This photo was like 20 min after first application.
I'm betting once you separate these paternal pieces of wood with a distance of 6" and beautiful black reciever, you wouldn't notice the shade difference until pointed out.
After photo in a week.

After photo in a week. And if all else fails . . . do the handguard too.

After photo in a week. The yellow is most likely just natural UV damage/aging. I'd either refin the handguard to match or try leaving the buttstock sitting in direct sunlight for a week or so. Flip it over every day so it gets an even sun soak on both sides.
