They are handy, and nostalgic. A 20” A2 is ideal for the range. Shorties are functional for defense out to at least 150 yards.

When I was a private, I use to take care of our weapons in the arms room, they were M16A1s (teardrop forward assist) and M16Mod1s (new upper receiver with round forward assist). For a carry handle AR, you can add night sights, less stuff to carry. I also prefer the A1 sight adjustment since it is harder to accidently change, compared to the newer A2. We got hand me down M16A2s in the mid 90s but I like the A1s.
