Well it is a slow Sunday so far. I wish I had more examples, but I don't. I only have a Russian M44 that exhibits this mark. They haven't been found in huge numbers, which would seem to be there weren't a whole lot of various Russian models that were sent to East Germany during the Cold War and marked as such.

I have personally seen examples of DDR (Deutsche Demokratische Republik) marked Mosin rifles on the 91/30, M38 and M44 models. This M44 is maybe more interesting than the average M44 as it has a Chinese import mark of the T53, the Chinese designated copy of the Soviet M44. The bolt exhibits a triangle 21 stamp, which is a known Chinese stamp.

The sequence of events can't be said for sure, but this rifle either went from Russia to Germany to China, or Russia to China to Germany. It also could be possible that the bolt in this rifle could have been put in at any old time, but the Chinese import mark seems to suggest it's last stop was China before it was imported here.

The bore looks solid, light frosting but still prominent slightly rounded lands and grooves. It does look like the stock was sanded at some point, but I am inclined to believe it was most likely done abroad. When I removed the barreled action from the stock, there was cosmolene all over it. It does not look like it was shot either, as the bore was slathered with cosmolene. I pushed out a cosmolene "snake" when I ran a patch through it after I acquired it. It also looks to be of an earlier import, probably something from the earlier 1990s. The serial number was stamped over, so the original letter prefix can't be made out. Still a pretty decent and shootable example of a DDR marked M44, as it looks like it spent some time abroad.

MZ, you have added some cool stuff to this thread, thank you.

I missed the Finn P-series post until now; that was very interesting. I haven't seen one of those.

May be able to soonly rival a fellow member with a pretty coolness factor 1893 Tula M91. And Remington M91 that looks legit!

I've got a M59 that I would love more information on. Not well versed on Mosins in general.

I rarely get into "town" but will be in the great Olympia/Tacoma area tomorrow all day if someone has time to take a look at it--I'll buy.

Thanks!

Wish I would have seen this sooner and could have made something happen. If by M59 you mean the model 91/59, then I have some information for you.

The 91/59 is a carbine length model, that looks from a distance like an M38. The 91/59s were cut down from 91/30 rifles. That's why they have the long 91/30 style rear sight. They retained the full length rear sight most likely due to the ease of just milling off 1000 meter graduations on the rear sight, and not having to machine the rear sight base that was machined on to the barrel to accept the 91/30 rear sight.

They can come in interesting configurations like hex receivers. The vast majorities are round receiver examples, usually later 91/30 production. There are some subtle stock differences, most likely cut down 91/30 stocks to fit the 91/59. I have never seen any M91s cut down to 91/59 style, but of course there are known 91/38 carbines, which are cut down M91s/Dragoons. The unique thing about the 91/59 is if someone wanted to throw it in an ATI or similar sporter stock, and scout scope it with a long eye relief scope. Simply remove the rear sight base exposing the rear sight grooves and then install some 1/2" rings to accept a scope.

It's been hypothesized the Bulgarians did this modification, but I don't know of any examples known to have for example, a Bulgarian pine cone mark in the stock. But, it is probably safe to assume that these were modified during the cold war era.

Quite an interesting 1893 dated Tula M91. Everything appears to have been updated to the curved rear sight. Stock has no evidence of having any old features on it, but has some gouges consistent with some use anyways. Hard to say as it has some Balkan heritage how long the stock has been with the rifle. Bore looks pretty decent, good lands and grooves, and shows a good bullet test. Barrel shank looks pretty typical Balkan with the Imperial eagle scrubbed. Top receiver flat doesn’t appear to have any evidence of an imperial eagle. Receiver looks to be pretty early. Port hole below the stock line that is plugged, presumably for ease of access to the threads for barrel removal or installation. Serbian “C” on the barrel shank as well, and additional stamp on the right side of barrel shank at the stock line. Tang is hard to read, but it looks like there is a Tula hammer on it. Not import marked, and I see no evidence of one anywhere. Bluing has pretty much been worn down to a patina on exposed metal parts. Metal under the hand guard and below the stock line looks good though. Interesting marks on the bottom of the barrel shank as well. Looks like something was stamped on the butt of the stock. Hard to make out. Bolt is from a 91/30.

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls for your enjoyment, a finely matched 1917 dated Remington contract of the Russian Model 1891. Some of you may recognize this fine item from somewhere familiar, where I'm sure too many of us spend way too much time on! Slight crack on the handguard, but everything appears to be Remington circle R stamped. Nose cap, barrel bands, bolt parts, and all parts with numbers have correct fonts, and match the receiver. I did not notice the missing button on the rear sight, but it still functions. The stock looks Remington, but I see no stock cartouche, and no import marks. Anyways, pics.

Rearsenaled. Receivers are 44, I would say Izhevsk plant, if my brain is functioning correctly.

That is some beautiful Goodness.
I can't have enough of this type, and I can't imagine a better Appleseeds type of rifle... Rounds are $.20 apiece, accurate or better with iron sights out to 300 yards, maybe 400.
Woo hoo.

Congrats on the new family members Root. Let's go shooting sometime.

Mike
