Trying to cut through an acorn squash just now with Rita's prized Japanese steel cleaver using a wooden mallet I made for her a while back. Gave it a good smack (which to my mind it should be easily able to withstand) on a heavy duty cutting board, and it snapped. Needless to say "snapped" and "prized" don't mix well, and she's more than pissed. Can this be fixed? I don't care about the scales, I can make new ones, but I have no way of fixing the break.

If you can fix it, what's it going to cost me? It was a $100+ knife when it was new, which was decades ago. All the writing on the box & blade are in Kanji and so far I haven't been able to find a manufacturer, the box is old enough to predate having a website on it.

Even if welded it is likely to break at that same point again.

Yeah, that seems to be the consensus on the other site I asked on, I guess I'll just have to find her a nicer one.

make a Halloween costume with it. Just attach one half to each side of the body and add blood.

Well, it appears you fucked that up comprehensively. Best bet is to buy another one and promise to not do that again.

Is that the clearest picture of the writing you can conjure?

While gorgeous, I probably would never buy one because I consider it a tool. And I suck at maintenance.

BUT, I will tell you that this guy makes tools. I have bought 2 and working on getting a third. All are Field knives but he makes kitchen knives too upon request.
