At first I liked your post, but then I realized that now I have a whole bunch of old fillings that are suddenly going to "need" replacement. icon_eek

Friends of mine - http://www.porcaropower.com/

Tell them Mark and Kelly recommended them.

I too think it's CRAZY to put paint on those nice cabinets.

It will look like ass if you paint those. If not now, soon. It's not about my preference for wood either (insert gay joke here)(insert joke about inserting gay here)

If it were me:

I would pull the backstop off and do a tile back splash all the way around. Something to complement the counter top but be a focal point of it's own. Then put in under cabinet lights and shut those gawdawful can lights off. Of course your wife hates the cabinets, I hate your cabinets, they're being spotlighted like a felon in a lineup.

You also need some nice pendant lights over the island. Focus the light down on the counter top, where she needs to be looking... to make you a sammich, and not notice the cabinets she doesn't like.

Some strip lights in those corner cabinets with the glass doors might be nice too. Depends on how clean you want to keep those dishes.

Stainless, or even black appliances would look better but I would do the lighting mods first and see how it looks.

Once you do the under cabinet lights you'll for sure want to do the tile back splash, so you might as well do that first thing.

do the lights THEN the tile backsplash as you may have to hide some hole sparky might make.

Hmmm... some people are known to have replaced painted cabinets with wood cabinets like yours. Oh, and they were happy to pay out big $$$.
I know, doesn't sound right, does it? :facepalm2:

Sounds like she wants a brighter kitchen? keep the cabinets as is, install new lighter counters new full height backsplash with under cabinet lights and SS appliances, maybe a nice white farm sink (Pinterest rage).

What's the "look" she is going for?

This is simple and useful.

That's what I'm seriously trying to avoid! I love my house.

Thanks for the off the input, guys. There's some good advice in this thread and I'll see what I can placate her with.

Fuck all that shit. Too complicated.

Get a cabinet making shop to come over, and make you new cabinet doors and drawers in whatever color she wants.

Leave the frames the way they are for contrast and a sane price on the refit.

Pull down and store all the stock originals so they can be reinstalled when she gets tired of the painted ones.

Every six years or so, just swap back and forth between the painted ones and the wood originals.

If you stay married for sixty years, you get 10 kitchen remodels for one price, once.

I think so too.
If the wine and solid advice already shared in this thread aren't effective, I recommend counseling. :wink05:
Those are beautiful cabinets, and painting them will turn that fine kitchen into a 1940s look. Nothing wrong with that, but... They painted those old cabinets because they were built from inferior wood.

You're going to want to use trisodium phosphate on those cabinets to remove any grease/gunk/stain after hours of scrubbing every nook and cranny, then prime them, and spray them at least 2 coats. Expect to pay big money if you hire it done. Typical kitchen will take 4-5 days.

Typical male responses.

Dude said his wife wanted painted cupboards. M'kay? And you give him advice on absolutely everything else short of carburetor repair.

René's advice was great. Other than that, the OP needs a PAINTER and not useless advice.

Sorry. Been married too long. I know how this system works.
