My wife has decided that the cabinets in our kitchen need painting. In the past, I would have tackled this project with gusto, but I'm too old and tired now.

Does anybody know a good interior painter/contractor for this? I'd love to have it done this fall. I'd also be willing to trade dental work for it if someone reliable (and licensed/bonded/etc) is up for the trade.

If you paint over those cabinets I'll never speak to you again.

Get her matching stainless steel appliances and call it a day.

ETA** your window case and trim are wood leading me to believe that the baseboards etc. are also wood. Painting the cabinets will create a mismatch between the moldings in the rest of the house and stick out like a sore thumb.

You guys are no help whatsoever!

Yes, our whole house is trimmed in wood. Lots of wood. Knotty pine. I love it, but my dear sweet wife tolerates it because she loves me. We've been here 6 years now and she's itching for a change. So instead of having to move, we're going to compromise and (gasp!) paint the kitchen. She has found ideas on the pinterest thingy that actually look okay and would still be consistent with the overall look of the home.

Trust me, it's not my idea or my favorite plan. But that's also why I'd like to hire a professional to do it right and not just half-ass it myself.

Alright fucker, here's the skinny on painting hickory cabinets. They'll have to strip or heavily abrade the finish to get paint to adhere. Expect a serious project. Luckily hickory has flat grain so they won't have to grain fill before painting. What they will have to do is cross their fingers that the paint adheres properly to the abraded wood. Expect chipping/peeling in the first 5 years and approximately $4k to properly paint them.

Pinterest is good for recipes and little decorations. I'm trying to give you ammo to fight back against the wife with. That's going to be my best contribution. Good luck man.

panels are also loosly set in the frames to allow for expansion. so, when they shift about in the frames you will see the hickory around the edges (unless u luck out and the paint locks them into place.)

keep the wood. a year after painting it will be back out of style and the paint will be chipped and worn as it isn't as durable as the finish on there now

and no, i don't paint cabinets

What he said, Actually what all of them said.

It will look like ass if you paint those. If not now, soon. It's not about my preference for wood either (insert gay joke here)(insert joke about inserting gay here)

If it were me:

I would pull the backstop off and do a tile back splash all the way around. Something to complement the counter top but be a focal point of it's own. Then put in under cabinet lights and shut those gawdawful can lights off. Of course your wife hates the cabinets, I hate your cabinets, they're being spotlighted like a felon in a lineup.

You also need some nice pendant lights over the island. Focus the light down on the counter top, where she needs to be looking... to make you a sammich, and not notice the cabinets she doesn't like.

Some strip lights in those corner cabinets with the glass doors might be nice too. Depends on how clean you want to keep those dishes.

Stainless, or even black appliances would look better but I would do the lighting mods first and see how it looks.

Once you do the under cabinet lights you'll for sure want to do the tile back splash, so you might as well do that first thing.
