On a national gun forum (We The Armed) I came across a contest held by Adams' Holsters. They were giving away a holster to someone who really needed it. So I posted the story of my 84 year old neighbor:

I'll start. I would like a holster to go to my 83 year old neighbor who is as spry as a 40 year old. This guy is a life long gun owner and hunter. He carries his Ruger SR1911 cross draw (he is right handed) and calls it "Big Iron" (after the Marty Robbins song). His current holster is one of those universal nylon/cordura type and is falling apart.

I was planning on trying to make him a leather holster, but I have never made one before and barely have the time for my own projects.

My neighbor is "that guy" in the neighborhood who puts away other people's trash cans when they forget, mows their lawn when they are on vacation and is always on the lookout for burglars, thieves, drug dealers etc...the neighborhood wouldn't be the same without him.

BTW if I do win, I would like to document the holster making and presenting of the prize to my neighbor

link to the forum thread: http://wethearmed.com/adams-holsters/ne ... r/new/#new

My story was chosen as the winner and via email Luke (owner of Adams' Holsters) chose the best holster for my neighbor (this was going to be a surprise).

We chose the "Appalachian" which is an open top cross draw holster that uses friction for retention. (http://adamsholsters.com/store/appalachianholster)

The holster arrived today, it is a beauty!

What an awesome neighbor to have! You were right on - he does deserve it.

Now.... who has a belt that matches that holster?

That's a great story, every neighborhood should have one of "those guys".

Awesome story, Casey, love it !

Sounds like a great guy.

Great pic, too! I like the mariner on the mantle, and the exercise wheel on the floor. Is he missing part of some fingers? Not relevant to the story, just an observation ....

Props to Adam's Holsters, might have to send them an email.

Sounds like you have a pretty cool neighbor :thumbsup2:

Though, I must say, it sounds like he has a pretty cool neighbor, too :cheers2:
