The build begins

We'll start with the bolt, it is a used bolt, but works just fine

if you are unfamiliar with 10/22 bolts, the firing pin is rectangular and rides in the channel in the middle, those divots you see are put there by the factory to keep the firing pin from riding up, but it isn't enough to keep the firing pin hitting the same spot. If we can hit the same spot on the rim every time we will get less misfires and better repeatable precision. So we will drill the bolt and add a roll pin

Image

disassembly

Image

1/16" Hi-Roc drill bit (needed to cut through the hardened steel the bolt is made of) and a stainless 1/16" roll pin

Image

drilling the hole, using high speed, lots of lube and patience (why do I have the feeling that statement is gonna end up in a sig line?)

Image

after drilling we insert the pin, with the gap on top and then check for fit

The fit is a little tight, but the firing pin moves freely, we'll polish the top of it smooth

Image

file the pin flush

Image

Debur and polish all surfaces of the firing pin, extractor and extractor plunger

Image

The top of the firing pin, super smooth

Image

next we polish the side of the bolt to prep it for jeweling

Image

using a stainless steel brush from my Dremel set and some valve grinding compound we go to work making swirls, the brush is about 1/4" in diameter, so we over lap by 1/2 (1/8")

Image

Image

Then we give it a good cleaning with brake cleaner and reassemble, I replaced the firing pin stop pin with a stainless one

Image

The bolt is finished and ready for prime time

Interesting. I've used a dowel and a felt tipped dowel for jeweling. Never used a wire brush.

Got some work done today, the trigger assembly provided by lunacite

Image

disassembled

Image

These are the two parts we are most concerned with, the hammer and sear

Image

might be hard to tell from the picture, but the surface is far from smooth

Image

Here they are polished, I also polished the ball end of the hammer strut

Image

and the face of the hammer

Image

The trigger shim kit from Lance from triggershims.com (www.triggershims.com)

Image

There are 8 shims, two large ones for the hammer, two tiny ones for the disconnector and the 4 medium ones are for the sear and trigger, the lines make it easier to line them up with the holes

Image

I use some Hoppes gun grease to keep them in place, sort of works

Image

the easy part is done....the hammer was the toughest

Image

I didn't get any pictures of the assembly as all three of my hands were busy, I installed the Volquartzen auto bolt release and the Timber Ridge extended magazine release

Wow . . . that looks REALLY good. Is the engraving filled with something, or is that straight out of the laser?

Wow, super impressed. The 22 firearm is completely foreign to me. It's like I'm learning a new language from this thread. Like I said before, I've never owned a 22.

Well you've certainly got my attention now. The work you've done is absolutely amazing!

How can you reach any age over 12, and not own a 22 rifle!?!?!?
