A guy comes back from Peru with a couple lobsters he caught, after getting his Peruvian fishing license and clearing the 'catch' with Peruvian authorities.

He goes through U.S. Customs, proud that he'd got some 'rare' lobster for his family to try...

He declares the lobster, and is immediately arrested for 4 felony counts (the # of lobsters he has) of attempting to import an unlawful object, unlawful transport of an endangered species, and importation of endangered species without a permit... 12 felonies in all...

The U.S. has the lobster on the endangered species list, but Peru doesn't, so it was 100% legal in Peru...

He should spend life in prison?

I was told by a judge that ignorance of the law is no excuse for breaking the law. How you are supposed to know every law is beyond me, but now days a person needs to do research first before taking chances. We are all quilty until we can prove we are innocent.

Welcome to the land of too much government.

That's why we have due process. He'll have an opportunity to explain his ignorance to the Judge.

Certainly illustrates why one should familiarize themselves with the laws before going to other countries as well as bringing stuff back into the US. I see this like those who whine about getting life sentences in other countries for possessing drugs. Some countries even sentence those in possession of what we might consider minor amounts of drugs to death.

Remember the movie Midnight Express? We were all supposed to feel sorry for Billy Hayes but it was he that strapped the two packages of Hash to his body to bring home. Nobody forced him to.

I also love lobster and estimate it will take us 8 gallons of vodka, 52 ginger beers, and 23 limes to make it to Maine. Road trip?

We need to revamp our judicial system in so many ways. <snip>

Just like our tax system.
It seems as if .Gov tries to "fix" perceived problems by adding new pages to already thick books. Contradiction and confusion become inevitable when law and code are written in this fashion.
We need a reset button on all laws/codes/rules/regulations... with the stated purpose of simplification and improvement.
For one thing, laws and initiatives should have a sunset date if they do not achieve pre-stated goals.

The Armed Citizen has always been my favorite part of Rifleman... Sadly, those don't make quite as splashy headlines as a multiple murder.
