I have a couple of 500 pound balanced flywheels just waiting for me to get finished building the house, then it's happening.
I vote for building here, then you trailer yours home.

Saw an article on some outdoor website showing a ball-peen hammer cum tomahawk that was pretty nifty.

You going to start a cottage industry, or is this strictly hobby time?

Hobby, although the wife does 2 holiday craft shows for her art, I'm gonna test the waters for some of the bottle openers and trinkets.

Drop a quarter in the pic for size reference. I like the fine detail. The piece you were wearing at the A-Hole breakfast was very well done. :wagwoot:

I picture those as being stakes driven in a lawn holding some sort of light...
Am I close?

Can you talk about how you choose which chunk of random steel for your projects? I have found that to be the biggest factor on whether a project works as intended. I tend to over-save spring steel, and use mild steel for too much, so some blades I've made are as sharp as a dull butter knife after 5 minutes of use.
I've used a piece of axle rod and found it to be the toughest piece of metal I've ever hammered on.
Mystery metal is used for 75% of my "fun projects".

Try old logging hand saw blades or old sawmill circular saw blades - hard stuff, but flexible too.

May be ideal knife material with edge tempering for hardness ?

Think Japanese sword making, where they clay tempered blades to harden the edge, but preserved flexibility in the rest of the blade for durability.

For these it basically worked itself out. I heated the springs and pulled them out leaving one end still looped. It just looked like something I've seen used in gardens to hold plants up so I went with it. My bro in law was here for thanksgiving and said he bought almost the same thing for his garden last year. As far as my other projects, I don't really have any system. I'm still really light on scrap steel. Trying not to hit the big box improvement stores for anything overpriced....
