If you were building a gun room/reloading room, what features would you want to include. I will be building a new gun room and am interested in hearing your ideas. I haven't determined the size yet, but probably about 12x15 with a 10' ceiling

fire proofing, secure window or no window at all. Steel door or steel reinforced solid wood door.

Make sure your safe is 6-8" off the floor (in case of fire or flood)

lots of shelves for storage

hooks on the ceiling to hang stocks while the oil dries/cures

good lighting

I need to organize my work spaces better. I have pegboard at my shop and at my reloading bench at home but the workbenches still get cluttered up with stuff that doesn't store well on the pegboard. I should probably get more plastic parts organizers and make shelves for them.

Last month I put together a spare computer for my shop. It's really nice to have so much information right at my work bench.

I'm up in the air about putting a tv in my shop. It would be nice to have a larger monitor for looking over plans but it might just be a distraction.

Good idea on elevating the safe. I get it for flood, is there an advantage during a fire?

concrete filled rebar reinforced concrete cinder blocks with double walled steel door with full hinge and frame reinforcement. That way, the entire room is your safe.

during a fire, if the FD responds they will put hundreds, possibly thousands of gallons of water on your house, which will end up on the ground floor or basement.

Things I wish my gun room had/was
Bigger
Bigger
Bigger
More secure
Dedicated computer
Bigger
If it were big enough to house reloading, it would need better ventilation
If it were big enough for gunsmithing, it would also need more lighting

Heres my thoughts

-Big as you can go.
-I would prefer more of a "two room" setup. Fireproofed area with a reinforced separate "safe". Think like a 10x10 inside a 20x20 space. The smaller area with reinforced concrete and the nice safe door. The bigger room to house things like reloading gear, parts, ect. Thought being that way you arent having to open a safe door every time which in turns more likely to leave it locked up.
-Built in fire suppression. Honestly look into it if you are remodeling or anything. Its pretty cheap to do (its more or less just running piping) and adds a layer of protection. When i build my house and shop itll have fire suppression built in.

Thats all that comes to mind that hasnt really been said already

Lots of good ideas. I'll likely go as big as possible, either a small window up high or solar tube style light. I like the idea of elevating the safe. Temp and humidity control. Dedicated computer would be cool. It will be for reloading and gun storage with a small workbench for cleaning and light tinkering. Double up on drywall for added fire protection seems like an easy option, and some sort of hardened door. Any more suggestions would be appreciated.

depending on your door double lock style like the gang box or forest road gates so you cant hack it and to open outwards , harder to kick in

sliding door like a pocket door

if you were to do somesort of ventilation do it like a z down the wall, 12x4 with the lower opening inside so you cant just peek thru

how are you gonna do your walls? rebar and wire mess

Good in theory . . . but in reality, takes up too much valuable space.
