What happened to "know your target, and what is behind/beyond it"? Pretty sure most LEOs know you can skip rounds under a car on pavement...
shooters knew the ground was pavement, hence, not safe for the downward angle at the dog. They choose to fire, they are responsible, regardless if they are held legally liable.

Option 1. Get mauled by a pit bull.
Option 2. Shoot it. The accident was a freak accident. Probably more likely to have killed someone in a car accident on the drive over.

You cannot eliminate all possible dangers in life. This was apparently an urgent response to an emergency self defense. They weren't firing into a crowd of people at a suspect.

Lol

As pointed out....

Know your target and what's beyond it. Clearly they skipped (pun intended) that part....

But yeah..... Again.. At what point does an officer's life become less important than Jow Blow's life? I think NYPD has the record for 9 injured..... Here is one dead... How many is OK to kill/injure before it's too many?

If one person was accidentally shot and killed, what about 2? How's 3? Is 3 too many to die to save a cop?

Lol... That's NYPDs job...

But seriously..... If it's between getting bit and shooting a bystander, your option is shooting the bystander?

The dog previously bit one of the police officers... Right? LE has a green light to shoot an animal that poses an immediate danger to themselves or another citizen.
Using the argument that they should know all ricochet paths for their bullets leads to the rather ridiculous conclusion that no one anywhere ever should shoot their firearms unless there is no other person within the skipping/ricocheting radius of the round being fired. Ipso facto.

In case it was missed- the teen had previously placed himself in extreme danger by jumping between the dog and the officer, then pulled it away around the building. The dog soon thereafter escaped the teen and ran back at the officers. It was dark, they had just been attacked and sustained injuries.

It was self-defense and an innocent guy lost his life. People die doing good things as well as bad things. It sucks.

Well, I guess according to some folks the cops should refuse to answer calls, stop suspects, and at the first hint of danger, cops should just run away. No more pursuits. No more disarming suspects. No more self defense. Just ******* run away.

Yeah, I bet society would benefit from that tactic, huh? :thumbsup2:

We've talked about 3 or 4 incidents in the last two days.

We've all taken M/C tests before. If you laid out the FACTS, the cops would be cleared in every case unless you have a certain anti-cop agenda.
These are the facts as the cops perceived them in seconds to react. You cannot mind-read or predict the future.

1. Cop stops a suspected armed robber. Cop smells illegal marijuana. Perp suspect says he's armed, and against common sense and multiple orders, reached for his gun. Cop shoots him after failed orders to stop.

2. Cops respond to call in a urban apartment complex of a drunk man swinging a handgun around the common areas. Cops arrive, and a man with a .42 BAC points a gun at them, from there perspective. Cops shoot him. (Turns out it was a hose nozzle.)

3. Urban area, cops chase down a suspect who flees and when corned pulls a Glock handgun from his waistband. Simultaneous as he's throwing the gun down, cops fire and kill him. Fatal shot comes 1.6 seconds after the gun is dropped.

4. Case at hand, cops respond to loud party and are attacked and bitten by a vicious large dog. Dog is restrained. Cops re-engage and the dog breaks loose and attacks again. Cops shoot in self defense. Total unpredictable unforeseen accidental ricochet kills dog owner, who the cops didn't even see until afterward.

Tell me where the cops in any of these instances were supposed to reasonable do something different?

It's not an "anti-leo agenda", it's a pro-accountability agenda.

Refusing to ever question law enforcement actions is how we end up with a police state.

The kid should not have died, but him jumping on the dog with hopes of stopping it while the officers are about to fire takes the blame away from the officers IMO.

So.. You missed the part about the conflicting statements....40ft away but shot while trying to jump on the dog?

Now we have to know when officers are about to shoot? WTF? So now citizens need to be mind readers to not get shot by police? Did you really just say that?
Dude...take a chill pill. The dog was close to the officers and the round exited the dog ricochet off the ground and struck the kid in the chest. IT WAS NOT INTENTIONAL!

If you have read past posts about his views on LE, you would not be shocked. I know I'm not.

I always said, if someone thinks they could be the perfect LE officer, then sign up.

Im not shocked. I am just tired of someone who has never been close to the action telling someone who was, how to do their job!
