“We’re really in a pussy generation. Everybody’s walking on eggshells,” he said in an interview with Esquire.

Where does being civil and polite cross over into an unacceptable version of political correctness?
We're all familiar with Robert Heinlein's aphorism "An armed society is a polite society." ... And we generally approve of (or tolerate) our opponents when they are polite in their disagreement with us, no?
There is quite a bit of disapproval for children that are rude, obnoxious, tantrum throwing etc - and we ALL seem to have a higher regard for well-mannered and thoughtful children.

The anti-PC crowd calls those who call for less rudeness Pussies, etc.

I guess I don't know where the line(s) is/are. Not many people call me a pussy when face to face with me, but it seems to be easy to call someone that across the internet. Why is that? (I am not referring to this thread- I consider Chris to be a solid good friend and he's been to my house and broken bread with my family many times.)

I think the anti-PC rage is just as bad as the pro-PC that goes overboard. There should be a happy medium maybe?

I haven't watched Dirty Harry in several years... I think I'll put that on the list for soon. Thanks for the reminder. :cheers2:

Sorry, Mike - compared to your wife, and even compared to your daughter - you are a pussy.

Feel the burn.

No, they're not equivalent, not even close.

Why? Because the PC SJWs are actively trying to shut down and silence anyone who disagrees with them, whereas anti-PC people just mock and deride the SJWs.

Silencing speech is not the same as mocking it.

There is truth to this... The little Balrog is a -serious- alpha human. She is not spoiled, but damnation, she goes her own way in a fearless manner.
This is no exaggeration : she makes me laugh hard every day, even the tough days.

But you just saw an opportunity to make a humorous jab at me... This is MUCH different than the PC thingy that Clint Eastwood is talking about, and much different than the issues that crop up here on the internets now and then.
No? Yes?
I generally have to lose my temper to spout off offensive names, in a name-calling rant... Apparently my pressure relief valve has a pretty high setpoint, because when I pop it is a volcanic pop and it feels like something breaks in my head... I mean I fucking want some motherfucking BLOOD when I finally reach that setpoint.
Maybe that is why I try so hard to avoid it?
Maybe having a lower setpoint and the ability to casually call someone else names is healthier....?
I enjoy calling a friend a humorous denigration... I enjoy friendly camaraderie both directions like that. I don't mind at all having someone get angry at me when I actually made a mistake, as long as it is measured and genuine. I don't take abuse well if it is prolonged and unnecessary.

So what exactly is this PC thing, and when does it cross the line from good old fashioned civility?

I disagree. I have been accused of being PC several times on this board, but never to my face. I think that you are picking and choosing your portrayal in a Strawman Argument way, not an accurate portrayal of actual instances on this forum.
Am I a SJW in your opinion?
Social Justice Warrior... We use it in a mocking denigrating manner to describe those who go overboard.
Social Justice is a GOOD thing. Going overboard on the PC is what we are talking about. I am asking about the line that is crossed between civility on overboard into the denigrated PC category.

Most any of us "older" guys that have to work in or around places that are touted as PC will tell you it's hard.
I've made jokes that weren't offensive at all and still got a hairy eyeball or they didn't/couldn't understand what I said.
Sometimes the stress isn't worth it.

I'd have to put the blame on what they are teaching in schools.
Don't make fun of anybody or anything.
Don't laugh at anything that could be considered rude or demeaning.
Don't agree with anyone or you will be condemend along with them.

Didn't realize you were limiting it to just this forum. OP was about society in general. And while your post discussed some forum interaction, it also discussed society at large. So I'll see your strawman fallacy accusation and raise you "moving the goalposts."

Social justice is a good thing in the way feminism was a good thing back in the day when it attempted to make women equal in rights. Today they have both been perverted into something terrible that's beyond recognition and that's causing the backlash we see today. When we are afraid to state facts and feelings, we have gone way past political correctness.

I am not limiting it to just this forum... I am asking for specific examples though, because I genuinely don't understand where that line is, you know?
I try to be respectful and have been accused of being PC... Like most topics in life there is a wide spectrum of experience and opinion. No big deal.

So my question is simple - what are the opinions of what is TOO PC and what is just common civility and examples of being well-mannered?

I am not trying to trap anyone here- just trying to learn where that line is for some people to better understand the topic. The part that I get my back up about is when there are shifting lines- "It's ok to be a dick if you're on my side, but not ok to be a dick if you're on the opposing side." That is a silly position (yes, I strawmanned it, hah) and in my opinion undermines whichever side uses it.

The question is simple, and the answer is probably not so simple. No pressure brethren, just trying to learn here.
I like curmudgeonly old people a lot, and curmudgeonly implies a lack of PC I think.

Right... I get that. I am using the words for what they MEAN, not for how they have been warped and twisted by special interest groups.
Social Justice is GOOD. "Enslave all white people to make up for black slavery in history" is bullshit for several reasons that needn't be gone into ... we don't have enough blank pages to type out all the reasons that something like that is bullshit.

Here is an example of an incident that was the result of being too PC: the Rotterdam child sex exploration scandal. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotherh ... on_scandal

In this scandal, partially attributed to institutionalized political correctness, up to 1,400 children were sexually abused.

I'm not sure I agree with Clint about dirty Harry. Is he really saying dirty Harry was less "pc" than gran Torino as an example?
That was incredibly non pc and from 2008. Get off my lawn!!
