I would love to hear how?

Is it a dvr type connected to internet or a "nest" style camera?

I'm a little (ok a lot) fuzzy on the details, as my boyfriend set it all up. But when the SmartThings security system is set off, the camera auto-records for about a minute (saved to the cloud) and I can watch that video to see why the alarm went off. Additionally, I can log into the camera (brand is D-Link) itself both through an app and the web and watch live. It has a built in microphone and speaker so I can talk to anyone in my house and hear their response. It all goes through my internet connection- I don't have a landline. I suspect if you google D-Link and/or SmartThings you'll get good information.

How are you getting your Internet? Cable or Wifi hotspot from a wireless phone provider?

OK, I am on the bottom when it comes to TV, Internet, etc...
I just cancelled my Dishnet account on the 12th. Bought a new 32" flat screen (Sanyo) and now have internet and telephone with Clink. No comments about Clink please.
I do not want to use cable, and I do want to be able to stream programs. The people I have talked to tell me that most of the programing is by subscription, and local channels will not be available ie:news. I do not do games.
What would be the best way to get a few free channels such animal planet, history, outdoor, classic movies.
If this is going to be a long drawn out process, please PM me.

For your local channels you should be able to get them with an antenna.

As for other "content" you'll probably have to subscribe to one of the numerous streaming services. I find that I get a lot of movies and "series" from my Amazon Prime membership. My TV has Roku built in and I manage to find all I need/want with that. I use the heck out of my "Prime" membership for shipping so in a sense the Movies are a free bonus for me.

New info for those that are following this thread.

I had been using a 1st generation ROKU box for a long time now.
Over the last couple months it's been getting really slow for down loading or 'streaming'.

So I decided to get the new Amazon Fire Stick w/Alexa remote. $39.99 didn't break me too bad. Although it took a month to get because they were constantly sold out.

I finally got it and away we go.
Remote is pretty slick, although it won't control my Echo Dot. It does search for movies by voice though. That alone sames typing time.
Now for the important part, I have only seen it pause ONE TIME to catch up with the streaming and that's been over two weeks now.
I'm impressed with that. It also hides behind the TV just because it is now a stick instead of a box.

One down side it either won't do or I need to look into further is, I can't put the XTV channel on it. Requires further study. :reaction:

Bottom line, if you are streaming and it keeps pausing to "catch up", I would recommend a newer box/stick from one of the better brand names.

Yeah, I had a similar experience a few years ago when I went from an original Roku to the Roku 3. It was like going from dial-up to cable internet, huge difference.

We have a couple of Fire sticks and have noticed they stutter a lot and respond slowly to the remote. For ~$30 they're not bad but we don't use them anymore because of it. Plus our Xbox does what we need for streaming TV now.

Just Netflix and Amazon. We got the Fire sticks for better Amazon streaming but wound up being unimpressed.

Hmm maybe a PIF is in order...

I have heard there are some good hacks for the fire sticks. Pretty legit.

Keep in mind that there are now two versions of the Fire sticks. The old and the new Fire Stick Alexa.
I have the new one and like Steve said above, "it's like going from dial up to dsl."

I recently purchased an Amazon Alexa Firestick and have it jailbroken. I can stream pretty much anything i want to watch for free. You have to have fast WiFi for it to work well, though.
