My 3 year old Balrog just reached one of my favorite stages.

I said "You sure are contrary."

Her immediate and vehement reply "I am NOT contrary!"

Been scratching my head for 15 minutes on this and still don't know what the hell is going on.

Image

Both tables are the same with one exception - the way the Payment Amount for June 2017 is entered. In the table on the left, the 6.28 in cell L26 is typed, not a formula. In the table on the right, the 6.28 in cell P26 is a formua (=R25). All values in the Payment Amount and Credit columns in both tables are typed in exactly the same.

The Ending Balances for both tables should be 0...not a number close to 0, but exactly 0. And yet, they're not. The table on the left is returning a number in scientific notation that is very close to zero. I included a sum of the Payment Amounts and Credits to show that they are indeed exactly 500 for both tables, so mathematically, the value in L26 is incorrect. So why is Excel doing this?

Well, since P26=R25, then your ending balance will always be exactly zero in the right hand column.

In the left hand column, I can only surmise that L25 is not EXACTLY 6.28000000000 . . . but rather is just a hair higher than 6.28, but Excel is rounding it off.

I'm going to guess that the cell L26 (or wherever you typed in the value rather than the formula) is not formatted as a number.
