Kick snozzberries in the nuts.
Sorry, I have that set as my stock reply.
I've always used olive oil and kept them in good shape but I've got friends that swear by using potatoes to season cast iron.

You shouldn't use it to season them though, as it has too low of a flash point.

I've been using coconut oil. I don't like olive and some other oils. It's just not as slick.
BTW I've done the NaOH dip for iron burner grills. Fantastic.

Olive oil goes rancid over time. Don't use it. Use regular vegetable oil. Some of my cast iron is quite old. My parents bought them when they got married in the early 40's. They still look great, and it's almost impossible to get food to stick to them. I just scrub them with a scotchbrite pad and water. Coat with a touch of oil, and Bob's Your Uncle.
I bought a cast iron dutch oven at a yard sale last year that was all rusty, and all I did was use brillo pads, oven cleaner, and lots of elbow grease on it. It cleaned up well, and now it's my camping pot.

Self clean isn't too hot. Just makes everything on the cast go away. Bare metal. Flash rusts quickly, but that's easy to deal with.

Just like when I said that the fire should be a (large) bed of orange coals.... works really well and doesn't smoke out the kitchen. Where would you be if you believe EVERYTHING that you're told or read on the interweb?
